I have tried all the usual such as removing the battery and holding the on button and connecting supply without the battery but the charge LED does not come on.It should be amber when charging and white when charged. What else can I do?

Try the little switch next to where you plug it in

no dont do that, use a voltmeter. laptop power supplies can have a pretty decent voltage.

Does the connection feel loose when you put the power cord in? You could try a hard reset of the laptop as well. Remove the battery, put in the power cord, and hold the power button down for 11 seconds. Then try to turn it on again.

if Bilby provided the make and model, a Google search would most likely yield the answer.

Quite true. Although in this case I would imagine it's related to the mother board or power jack if I had to make an educated guess.

of course, it can only be those two things or the charger itself, but without knowing what the computer is, it is still a stab in the dark.
I know that the Dell Inspiron laptops had a batch that would suddenly stop charging and it was the motherboard and no fix for it.

and there was another charging glitch I remember that required resetting some thing on the mobo and involved paper clips to short it out and reset. I think that was an issue when using a non-Dell charger, some wouldn't be recognized.

Good point there :). It could easily be something that other people have encountered.

I fixed it in the end by taking out the battery for a week. I started it in Safe mode as the not shut down correctly message came up.
