I am embarrassed to say I actually like a lot of her music. I personally think she is an industry plant an just an image being marketed to people under the guise of true "indie" musical talent. I think her talent in terms of singing and songwriting is quite limited, but she has some of the best producers and musicians backing her up to create her albums and live shows. The aesthetic of her music is strangely easy to like.
I tend to agree with your assessment of her. I dont really get a sense of authenticity from her; I think she is presented as this original, unique indie darling but her image and music is as carefully cultivated as any other pop princess. But with that said I still really enjoy her music.
I like Billie Eilish : ) The teenagers say that cringe culture is dead. People don't have to be embarrassed about what they like anymore.
It annoys me how much plastic surgery Lana Del Rey has gotten I dont think people ever look better after plastic surgery That's actually one thing I really appreciate about Billie Eilish, how she downplays her looks. She doesnt have to of course, there's nothing wrong with a pretty girl embracing her beauty. but I like that she does, nevertheless
Well, some bands or artists are annoying 'tools' or 'riding the bandwagon' and if one likes and values authenticity or integrity that can be a reason to get annoyed at a band/artist and feel ashamed for also digging their tunes. Guilty pleasures may technically be pointless but no, guilty feelings do have some use I don't feel anything close to a guilty pleasure where it comes to Lana del Reys music (not because i dislike it lol). Better a well inspired (or stolen/borrowed) sound then bad invented <-- i think there are some exceptions to that 'rule' though
I like Billie and Lana both myself. Billie is more gimmicky and less traditional than Lana though. But I had the opportunity to hear her live performance out of Austin Texas or something; they were airing it on satellite radio in my car... and she has an amazing voice!
How is she gimmicky? She's very modern. She's a teenager of Today, definitely. Lana was not even of 2010 or whenever she came out, she was always going for a "retro" image.. which seems more gimmicky to me (although I don't think it was, I think it is her genuine taste).
I haven't heard her new album but Lana Del Rey's music possesses a certain ambiance which I like and prefer over the vast majority of singular pop singers.
Every once in a while, corporate mainstream music can be pretty good. I haven’t heard much of Del Rey’s music, yet I don’t remember disliking it.
Care to elaborate on this? Like I'm picturing record execs getting in a room and saying "Let's find an attractive young woman to draw upon nostalgia of 20th century Americana and use Radiohead's 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' and trip hop as a template for her entire career."
She had a hand in cultivating her image, I'm not necessarily saying she was forced into it. But it's definitely a cultivated image. And I'm sure her record label gives their input just as much as they gave input into Brittney Spears' image, etc. And she co writes her songs so while she has a hand there too, there are definitely other hands that are involved in creating her sound. And the music is really well produced but also heavily produced, like I said she's not an indie darling who has control over the whole process. It takes a village to create Lana Del Rey. I dunno, I cant really expand much on it because I would have to research her career and I dont wanna lol..but that's the vibe I get from her.
She does that one song, "summertime sadness" you've probably heard ad nauseum. I mean she has other songs too, but that one was a mega super hit for a long time. Lately, they're doing her cover of Sublime's "Doin' Time/Summertime" on the radio a lot. The actual original may or may not have actually been a Janis Joplin song; I don't know. "summertime and the living's easy" and then "Bradley's on the microphone with ras m.g."
ACTUALLY According to my research The original Summertime was written by George Gershwin for the American opera Porgy and Bess, the first opera to feature a mostly african american cast One of my favorite operas. Look it up on youtube sometime, it's so good K I'll shut up now
