don't get so uppity. we do a lot of hauling and we have no driveway. you need a vehicle that can get through all the mud and often snow. htere's equipment to haul, back roads to navigate, shit to do. i bought my used suburban in mid november. it's used for dragging around a lot of shit. i haven't had to put gas in it since i bought it. we don't all live in cities. but at the same time, we can't all afford work vehicles AND "getting around town" vehicles. if you can, lucky you.

Ok.. but if you would have read my previous posts in this thread I said that having to drive through rough terrain is an understandable reason for getting a big car..

So there's no problem here is there.. and I'm not being uppity, since I'm not sceptical to people who actually NEED such a big car. Having a small weener or ego isn't enough reason.. having to get through mud and snow is.. in my opinion.

But maybe a driveway would be a nice idea? :p Or do you live on a very large property?

paving not allowed where we're building. i'll have to settle for gravel, but when the weather gets shitty, it doesn't do you much good. and i haven't had to buy gas for my car because i am very organized and don't have to go out as much. and i can pack that baby FULL of food and wholesale groceries.. it's awesome. you did sound kinda uppity to my post, though. ;)

though, exactly what purpose does a hummer serve to a suburban mom?

Ok.. well.. sorry for sounding uppity.. sometimes I just only see the 'stereotype know all am allowed to do anything' american and that's not right, I know. Monosphere is a perfect example of an American I personally know and like.. but when people start talking about how they can't get their enormous car into a normal spot I start wondering what all those USarians need those cars for.. they can't all be living in muddy area's can they? ;) So again.. sorry :)

And yeah... hummer and suburban mom doesn't sound like a logic combination..

I mean.. I like those cars.. I got a thing for big cars.. but I like a lot of things that I wouldn't want to do or have because of some sane reasons.. like the environment for example.

well, a lot of people own them for safety. paranoia among drivers is rampant among americans. my husband is a good example. he wouldn't let me buy a small car to drive me and kai around in for anything, because everyone else has big cars, and he'd rather see me come out the winner in that fight.

yeah.. it's a vicious cycly that way.. hopeless.. but as soon as there aren't anymore countries to invade for oil or it just simply has dried up, you'll all convert to the small practical ones :)

my vehicle is actually economical for how big it is.... I have a pontiac grand prix sedan and it usually gets around 25-30 miles per gallon, which is decent

well you are a unique case. most people I see with suv's live in the suburbs. and the only "rough terrain" they encounter are the speedbumps at the local mall.

I even have two brothers with SUVs and they know how I feel about them. my youngest brother is actually starting to figure out that his suv is costing him more money than he planned. it eats up gas like you wouldnt imagine.... yet he doesnt do any offroading with it...... just highway miles.

my sister-in-law owns a durango. she can barely afford it now. i like my old suburban. i got it for $1000, it runs like a dream and meets the emissions standards. i haven't done the mileage on it yet, since i haven't had to refill it yet, but 2 months on one tank seems pretty good to me.

we're renting in the suburbs, building in the hills. but even if we weren't building out in the back of beyond, we'd still need the vehicles we have. my husband's company does GPS of various untility lines and pipelines. these different jobs require the hauling of a lot of stuff very frequently. including the camper he often resides in, to cut down on driven miles every day. we both haul stuff for the company, and well as for family or friends. such is the burden of the large vehicle owner.

one more thing...... most people here get suv's because of terrible kansas weather, right?? well I can see where they have an advantage in snow due to their 4wd capabilities. but the weather here has more ice than snow, usually, and ice is ice.... no car can drive any better on the ice than the other, even if they do have 4wd. the thing is, most people that slide off the highway in bad weather are usually people driving suvs. why is that?? because the dumbasses behind the wheel think that their vehicle can go through anything, and they can go any speed, and make stupid moves, because they are dumb enough to think their car can handle it. and thats what makes suv's dangerous, but thats a whole different story.

ingorant assholes. dave always said "don't drive any faster in the snow and ice than you want to be going when you go off the road." even in good weather, a lot of people have no idea how to drive suvs.

exactly. thats why they suck. Ive seen more people get into accidents because they got an suv. people dont know how to drive period. and they think with an suv, they can live life more dangerously.

Unless that's all you can afford. My last car was a '73 Chevy Impala (ghetto-cruisin boat) because it was the most mechanically sound vehicle I could find for $600.

Now I drive a truck because I got it as a hand-me-down from my dad. It gets like 22 mpg, which sucks, but it's better than walking that 7 miles to campus in the rain or snow... And I usually only have to fill it about once a month, since I don't put that many miles on it.

But, yeah, the suburban soccer-mom with the shiny new Hummer is just obnoxious. I didn't realize this (and most of them probably don't either), but my boyfriend told me that, because of the way they were designed, using a Hummer for just city driving & not taking it off road will cause all kinds of expensive mechanical problems... Golly gee, can we say money pit? But, then, who cares, as long as it lasts as long as the fad does, then trash it anyway...

And you can get a relatively energy-efficient 4wd Subaru sedan for those road conditions as well (assuming you can afford it!).

Just for the record...not like I have to EXPLAIN or defend myself about ANYTHING...I live in MIchigan (USA) where we get A LOT of snow. The road I live on gets plowed MAYBE once a winter...without my 4wd truck, there's no way I could make it down my road. Thank my parents for having a farm out in the middle of nowhere for that. I wish I could get on without a gas guzzling vehicle, but a broke college kid like me...can't afford much else that has 4wd capabilities.

Thanks for being "uppidy" about it, though...

DAMN, is it just cuz I'm American???
