Agree. You seem to have balanced view of your chosen eating plan; I hope most vegans are like you. Actually, the group that I REALLY worry about are the extreme raw foodists, or "fruitarians". Some of these people believe they can thrive on a "Garden of Eden" existence, where they only eat food that doesn't have to be processed or cooked in any way. No protein, no vitamins..nothin'!

Ok, I was a bit cheeky on that one. On the same page, the maximum absorption of non-heme iron (which I 'conveniently' left out;) ) was stated as ~20%. I'm sure there are varying figures out there.

I don't know a lot, but I used to have a great book called "The Yeast Connection", although it's probably 10 years old by now.

If you expand your Google searches to include words and phrases such as "yeast infections", "thrush" (i think it's the same fungal organism), and the supplement, 'ACIDOPHILUS BIFIDUS', you should find stacks of info.

The candida exclusion diet is a very difficult one to follow, as it is SO strict. For memory, carbohydrates must be significantly reduced, and all refined carbs should be eliminated. This includes the high glycaemic fruits, and those that are unpeeled, such as grapes and berries, etc. Almost all alcohol should be avoided (i think gin is permitted), as too should breads and all baked products with yeast in them. Most vegetables and protein foods are ok.

Environmental moulds in damp climates can worsen symptons.

As i said above, ACIDOPHILUS BIFIDUS, is an over the counter supplement which is almost always recommended, and I'm pretty sure there's a prescription drug called "Nystatin"

Unless a person has obvious physical symptoms, it's apparently difficult to diagnose because there are so MANY symptoms

Here's some good B12 info, and it's even on a vegan web site!:)

Aye, my dad has that book, the Yeast Connection. ;) I think he has the newer version though.

He also takes acidophilus bifidus, as well as probably 20 other supplements, ranging from vitamin A to E, calcium, iron, iodine/"super kelp," and PLENTY of other things. He has to stay away from sugars completely (and I try to stay away from them too, as I have a relatively powerful case of candida myself, though it hasn't had as much time to develop before I cut down on sugars and killed a fair amount of it, or so I am told), not to mention many other things.

Good to hear that you know about candida as well. =)

Why are you worrying about them? I would say that the number of people that make up that group is extremely small and unless one of them came to you asking for your professional services I really can't understand why you would be bothered about what someone else puts in their mouth? If you were going to be worried about peoples diets I would say that there are a lot more people to worry about that eat the wrong things or eat way too much overly processed foods and stuff like that...

fair enough, I have only ever known one person who was fruitarian for a while but then I don't know so many people...I suppose what I am questioning is his concern with those people and what they eat, sure it is obviously a subject of interest being a nutritionist student but I suppose I am just questioning why someone who names themselves omnivore and then jokes about being happier if others eat fish seems to me to be overly concerned about what others are doing to themselves that really has very little impact on them...suppose I am asking the same question as drumminmama ......except maybe I am expecting a serious answer?

I found some more good B12 info; this one on a veg web site

    http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/b12.htm

    Quote:

"Plant foods do not contain vitamin B12 except when they are contaminated by microorganisms. Thus, vegans need to look to other sources to get vitamin B12 in their diet........ vitamin B12 deficiency is a very serious problem leading ultimately to irreversible nerve damage. Prudent vegans will include sources of vitamin B12 in their diets. :D

I've gotta admit I had grand plans of coming on the fourm as a bit of stirrer (what, with the name and all), but it's not really in my nature, and, being in my 30s, I'm probably a bit too mature for that.

It does worry what other people do to themselves. If I read on the forum that someone had decided to live on a non-supplemented fruitarian diet, I'd be concerned for their health. Wouldn't you, even if you don't know them? You gotta believe me; I'm a caring guy.:) Meat eaters can also be softies, too: I bawl my eyes out every time I watch Wuthering Heights

    omni vore,
I don't need you "worrying " over my health. I 'm educated and am capable of doing research.
I'm probably older than you, to boot.
I've been veg for more than 22 years.

I like the Taoist philosophy that there is no moralistic wrong or right, but suffering should be avoided. I'm letting it slide because you're cute. :$

I only talk about why I'm a vegitarian if it's to someone who is open minded or curious. If someone acts agressive or accusitory, I tell them it's due to my personal beliefs.

But the reason I'm a vegitarian isn't because I'm against eating animals per se. I'm against the notion that since we're "superior" to animals, we can exploit millions of animals; forcing to live out their lives in factory farms because - why not? We're people, they're animals. . . But we are animals. So saying that their lives don't matter because they're "different" from us is what I disagree with. I don't think that my being a vegitarian is going to shut down the factory farms, I'm just personally opposed to the mentality that puts them there.

Don't waste your time on people who would only like to harass you, if they don't want to listen they won't. The best advice is to gain knowledge for yourself, for when someone really wants to gain from knowing what you can teach them.
