I'm out in Hillsboro. The outskirts of the weird. When I'm in Portland I help keep it weird for sure. I was just in Portland the night before last tearing it up at a show
I live in Portland. I kinda feel like people here try way to hard to be unique little snowflakes. I keep it weird by being a mostly-normal human being who doesn't have any tattooes, hates the homeless, and doesn't like coffee. Does making hipsters uncomfortable and blowing pot smoke at tourists while cutting them off on my bike count as weird? I guess I got a bit of the Portland spirit in me by this point.
"Nobody can keep you from being true to yourself." Some of the 'weird' things Portland does are very old and not very original. Still an awesome city and I'm lucky to be stuck here for a bit...
I saw a Simpsons episode that's closely related to this. It was about "keeping Springfield weird" and the moment I saw it I remembered this thread. The episode was amusing though because this obligation to "keep things weird" only made the weirdness "trendy". And trendy isn't cool, trendy isn't weird any longer. So anyway Springfield became hip and trendy and so all the weirdos went off to the next town to make and keep that "weird". reminded me of gypsies to be honest.
I'm in Seattle, the Emerald City lost somewhere over the rainbow you never see because the sun never comes out, but I'm originally from the Twilight Zone myself and never have figured out if the rabbit hole has a bottom much less where you might find it.
