Fifteen years ago I found out Portland's motto is Keep Portland Weird, so I decided to do my part by moving here. How about you? ARE YOU HELPING KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD?!
I have a friend that lives very close to Portland, so I can promise you since she is in fairly close proximity her presence is helping to maintain the city motto.
I always thought it was keep Austin weird.. But don't matter, we need more weird places.. So, where ever your at people let your freak flags fly.
Keep Portland Weird sign is in intro to Fred Armisen's quirky (I think: brilliant) TV show Portlandia
Do you like living in Portland? I've visited and it was definitely a magnet for my weird soul. I've heard it is becoming gentrified. Do you find this to be the case?
Yeah, Austin was the original Keep "city" weird Portland adopted the same slogan and it really sold out there
Hah! I love that phrase!! I saw a sticker in Manitou Springs, CO that said "Keep Manitou Weird" and got a good laugh out of it. I want one that says St. Louis so I can sport it on my brand new 2018 Mazerratti!
Maybe the keep "city" weird campaigns have the effect of creating gentrification, and the whole thing is being backed by the real estate industry
When the Portland International Airport announced that it was going to replace its iconic carpet with this pattern due to excessive wear and tear, there was a public outcry because this original pattern could not be re-manufactured. So people actually started buying bits and pieces of the original carpet and turned it into merchandise. There is now all sorts of products made with the graphic design pattern of this carpet that pay homage to the classic carpet pattern. Take a look: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=PDX+carpet&tbm=shop The fascination with the carpet at the airport definitely qualifies Portland as weird for sure!
Yes it is becoming gentrified. I was kicked out of downtown due to ungodly high rent prices. I wish it wasn't so popular in media. I like Portland, but I'd move away to someplace more affordable if my job allowed me to.
The residents pride themselves on being open minded toward other people's quirks, thus encouraging weirdness.
I've seen videos of whackos in NYC. It's not like I'm going to believe that the whole of Portland carries on like this.
