I do it. Basically because my children purchased 2 kayaks. We perform mainly in a nearby lake. Also at the river, but this year it's almost dry due to barely rain.

are you not concerned about gators? I live in an area where there are no gators but just south and east of me there are some in the lakes and rivers.

I've a Old Town 'Loon', A flatwater sit-inside tandem. Wonderful boat; can't imagine why they went out production.
Wish I had someone to paddle with.

We have Old Town Otters bought back in the 90s.

We take them on lakes, rivers, and streams and have seen eagles, goshawks, otter, mink, etc.

    Ocean kayaking sounds boring.

We had a tandem sit-on-top; used to see dolphins, manatees, turtles, osprey, and eagles with regularity; occasionally sharks and rays.
Could access very remote beaches, too.

I used to kayak, and had a lot of fun. Maybe get back into it this year. Flatwater, and class 2 is all I ever did.

Kayak instructor, had my own kayaking group for several years, but after suffering a spinal disk compression, those days are now done. Have a Necky Chatham 17 sea kayak, started the Kayak marathon event locally, running from the tributary Eno river to the Falls lake dam just north of Raleigh (26 miles, a true Marathon). Also did the Outer Banks, once kayaking over an entire school of Hammerheads at Shackleford Banks. And have been off the coast and out of sight of land, quite the experience. Make sure you have a boat mounted compass, a compass in your PFD (and wear it), as well as a handheld GPS on a lanyard before you try that one, unless you want to inadvertently visit Europe.

Slightly more spendy. But would be nice to sleep aboard a larger yak.

  13. Yep , into kayaking . Not so much now , I am less of a "bendy wendy" than I used to be . "It's an age thing darlings, lol" .
I did river trips alone ,camping on the river bank. Loved the deserted stretches where I could paddle nude .
Sea kayaking is fun . I've never surfed but in a kayak even tiny waves pick you up and sling you down the beach. Used to fish from it too , in the sea towing a multi hook line with spinners to catch mackerel. Great fun.
Also into archery, with my OH . Tried shooting from my kayak once , standing up ,damn near killed myself as I fell out ,haha.
