Justin Bieber beats Elvis Presley's US chart record

Are there any Beliebers out there? There must be quite a few in the world for Bieber to have broken Elvis' record. Personally I couldn't name a single song of his, but I don't follow what's in the charts. I get the feeling it wouldn't be my kind of music, with his reputation as a teeniebopper. Still the boy's done good, and he must be making a lot of youngsters happy.

He was on Letterman a few times. He said nothing to impress me; seemed like an airhead.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I don’t think Elvis was ever arrested for DUI, assault on a limo driver, and a second assault on a paparazzi, vandalism of a neighbor’s property, along with a string of other questionable activities and bad behavior.

True. Elvis was a total saint.

Right. I'll take your word for that as I haven't seen him interviewed.

This reminds me of Public Enemy's lyrics in Fight The Power:

They obviously had him down as a racist, but I don't know enough about Elvis to know what their gripe was with him.

Elvis was a racist but that's not the point I was trying to make.

Well I suppose when you're very young and get success with lots of money you don't always handle your life that well. Plenty of pop stars and footballers do stupid things when they're young. Even Rod Stewart got arrested for allegedly punching a security guard the other day, and he's 75.

Bieber's success is primarily the result of good marketing rather than good music imo. Very early on, he worked with and was endorsed by Usher, who was a prominent Pop/R&B singer at the time and based on everything I've heard that Bieber has released as a single, it's basically less explicit ear candy of what's trending.

Bieber got off to a freakishly early start to his professional career at age 12, and he released his first album at age 16; Presley released his first album at age 21.

Justin did surpass Elvis on this one measure at age 25, but it's an apples-to-oranges comparison in lots of ways. It took Bieber longer to get to seven. Elvis also did two years of mandatory military service before age 25. Justin won't ever have to serve. They're both hugely popular in their own times, but Elvis has now been dead for longer than he was alive. I wish JB a life longer than EP's 42 years, but I doubt that JB will end up being remembered as well or for as long as EP after he's gone. Time will tell.
