I have been summoned for the first time. I haven't a clue what to expect. But I suppose I will have to do my duty. Interested to hear all experiences, please.
I've been called twice in the past four years, and it's kind of a boring day, unless you end up getting called to the courtroom, to be questioned for possible selection. That can be interesting to see how the legal system works.
I think we do the same. They will take one look at me, and out!!!! lol Joking apart, I bet I end up as spokesperson.
I served around 10 years ago, got seated on the jury but then I suppose the defendant ( drug charges ) didn't like our looks or something because he made a last minute plea deal. I was relieved to just be out of there and get back to work.
Candy darlin' both Prosecution and defence have the right to 'challenge' members of the jury without giving a reason for doing so, so if you happen to be unfortunate and are 'challenged' - don't take it hard, its not a stain on your character, merely that in the eyes of either prosecution or defence your not suitable.
I remember being nervous, too...but you'll see, nothing to worry about. You'll be more bored than nervous. lol
don't forget- if a law seems unfair to you and the rest of the jury, you all can nullify the verdict. the judge cant tell you this neither can the atty's.
Each attorney has one goal in mind seating the most favorable jury he/she can assemble. Watching each side find reasoning to have a potential jurist removed is interesting I must say.
I've been called many times and have been selected as part of a jury a few times, often when I least expected it. For some reason, every jury I have served on has chosen me to be foreman. The process is inconvenient, often boring, sometimes interesting. I always tell myself that if I were on trial, I would want someone like me on the jury, so I do my duty to help the system work.
I've done it three times. Once in Hartford and twice in New Britain. The only thing which saved me in Hartford? Time. 5 pm hit. One other person and me were free to go. That was back in 1994. The last time was in 2016 or so. Haven't received any type of notice to serve since.
