link to news This is one I care about, as a tween in the early 80s, the four scariest movies were The Exorcist, Alien, The Elephant man and 1984. He started in 3 of them. Also later, V for Vendetta, IMO one of the most underated movies ever, was kind of like a 1984 sequel. Sad news. Another one that was battling cancer without making a fuss about it
John Hurt was great as the Elephant Man. That movie really put the whammy on my head when I was little kid. The real John Merrick was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis (The elephant man disease) but actually suffered from a more severe form of the disease called Proteus Syndrome John Hurt was also great as Caligula in the TV mini-series I, Claudius (I have the complete series on DVD) RIP Hotwater
I was really little when I saw the elephantman with my parents, brother and sister in the theatre.. I remember the theatre was full of smoke cause some younger people were smoking weed in the theatre, a group of them... they got kicked out. My dad complained that his children would get high. My mom wanted us to have compassion or maybe they just couldn't find a babysitter. What a great actor and person. It kept me awake. I think it was the first movie I cried watching.
He was excellent as Caligula - and other creepy type roles like Richard Rich in 'A Man for all Seasons'.
Be it Kane, Smith, Sutler, Crisp, Caligula or War Doctor, (amongst many other films) Sir John (CBE) = Great British actor Exits stage left to Rightful Standing Ovation
I will always remember The Elephant Man movie, and came to know about and love the elephant man because of it.....and only really know John hurt with that role....What an amazing job he did. I also heard Maverick person died...although, I do not really know who that is.
didnt recognize him at all ...my first thought was wow he looks different then i realized i never heard of this guy and was thinking of william hurt
John Hurt I put in the same category as Richard Jenkins... great actors but not pretty enough for leads or to be recognized by the masses as being the best in their craft. Masters
