because the early Christians borrowed heavily from pagan holidays - it was the only way to bring pagans around to celebrating Christian holidays, by blending them with preexisting holidays.
Roman Emperor Constantine and the actual time of Jesus' birth is placed somewhere in Sept-Oct. by most scholars. all the information to deduce that is available in the scriptures.
pagan sun worship. december 21st is the winter solstice. ancient cultures saw victory of the sun over darkness by the daylight period getting longer after december 25th.

its not like anyone really celebrates it as jesus' burfday anyways. It still has closer ties to paganism than Christianity. I'm not a Christian and I also really deplore the commercial aspects of Christmas but once you get past all that craziness its a pretty nice holiday.
my grandma always used to make a birthday cake for jesus on christmas. but yeah, 99% of people that celebrate christmas know that he wasn't born that day; it's just used as a celebration of his birth, not an anniversary.
So you don't have a better date. How do you know if Jesus never celebrated his birthday or not Let me guess: you just have a problem with this holiday?
25th day of the tenth month? (which is now october). that's a more logical date, given the conditions described. on the other paw; i'd rather celibrate giving a shit about peace, then when someone was born or killed. for which the winter solstice, is, i'm sure, as good a day as any.
It makes sense to have a holiday at mid winter.Days are short, temperatures disappointing. Nature seems to have gone to sleep. The date is arbitrary but so what? No doubt it's all about the solstice as others have said.
