But does Brubeck swing? Terd Burglar - scales and modes aren't everything. You can play anything without knowing the theory, and knowing the theory and having skills doesn't give you the talent to play anything beautiful. It's either in you, or it's not.

I love Monk, Trane, Parker, Rollins, all the old hard boppers the best. I was lucky enough to grow up with all those guys music, thanks to my dad.

For drums, I'd choose afro-latin as the coolest as well as most difficult style. But jazz and afro-latin share a lot of concepts that are difficult.

afro-cuban is awesome. some pretty hard stuff. to really appreciate the complexity of afro-latin or afro-cuban rhythms, you have to play the clave rhythm on the hi hat with the left foot all while your hands and other foot are going wild on some crazy rhythm...... by far one of the most challenging styles of music there is. I recommend buying Afro-Cuban Rhythms for Drumset by Bob Weiner and Frank Malabe.....truly one of the best books to learn afro-cuban rhythms from

    awesome stuff!!!!
    I love playing drums!!!!
