I heard them say on the radio last night that their is a high probability, based on previous experiences of earthquakes, that Japan could experience an aftershock of around 8.0 on the richter scale.

I predict they will eventually inform us that at least 2 nuclear reactors suffered partial or complete meltdown and will need to be entombed in concrete and steel forever. We will also find out the amount of dangerous radiation leaked from the plants will far exceed the TMI incident.

Well we all must pray for every single person in Japan who is fighting against all the odds for survival.

Speak for yourself! People are dying. Don't be an insensitive prick. Those are innocent men, women and children who did not deserve to be blown up, drowned, or smothered in mud. You try fighting for your life sometime and we'll see how cool with it you are! :toetap05:

I know, huh. :( It's scary to look at!

I wish I could do something to help.

UPDATE: Attempts to cool a second reactor at Fukushima with sea water have failed. Turns out this reactor doesn't just use uranium, but also plutonium, which is "twice as bad". Also another nuke plant is reporting another reactor has overheated and is releasing radiation. This isn't close to being over. I bet the Fukushima plant will NEVER REOPEN.

This is going to KILL the rebirth of nuclear power around the world. It's over folks!

And all these old style plants should be shutdown if they're this fucking dangerous!

The guy who designed the nuke plants that are melting down has said the Japanese government is lying to everyone about the dangers. He says there could be explosions that would release radiation in a radius of 50km. He says you could have multiple Chernobyl like events...(in a worse case scenario, which seems to be what we have now)

The Nuke industry has been lying thru its teeth for decades with their claims of safety. And their shills who go around saying "nuclear power isn't stupid, people against nukes are stupid..." have been lying to us too.

So in summary there are three nuke plants with issues. Two are in the Fukushima area. One plant alone, where the first explosion occurred still has three reactors overheating being flooded with sea water (unsuccessfully so far). So in total there are at least FIVE nuke reactors with serious problems.

Exactly. People love saying that humans deserve this and that.... just so long as they themselves are not affected. Anyone that can look at what is happening in Japan and not feel sad is extremely cold-hearted.

It's only as safe as the people who run it are reliable, and just how reliable are people these days?

I studied physics at glasgow university many years ago and one of my professors of theoretical particle physics, one of the ones who was so brilliant he never spent much time lecturing sadly, I remember him saying once about how frustrated he was at the hysteria over nuclear energy. He considered it to be a lot safer than people gave it credit for.

I don't know, all I know is I don't trust it. I doubt it is any more sufficient to meet our demands as solar, wind or any other source of energy is these days.

It's not where we source energy that we need to address, it's how efficiently and sparingly we use what sources of energy we have at our disposal.

The French Embassy is advising its citizens to leave Tokyo and its surroundings in case a cloud of radiation heads to the city.

And the French know a LOT about nuclear power plants since their country has so many of them...75.2% of France's energy comes from nukes, the most of any country in the world.

The worst aspects of nuclear power besides the dangers we see today are the incredible resources required to create a plant, the long term disposal of radioactive waste, the local affect on water resources (hot water is put back into the environment, sometimes it's radioactive).

Given the world's hunger for more energy, I was considering supporting nuke power (for the first time), but not now! You saw what Chernobyl did to the surrounding countryside. It's uninhabitable. What could be worse?

Give us unlimited alternative energy sources. Put the money they'd use for nuke plants into wind and solar and see what happens!

I don't really believe that solar or wind power is any more sufficient either.

I've always been curious about the idea of power homes by bicycle though, at least in part.

We all generate energy from eating food and you can really generate a lot of power from food. A lot of what we eat is wasted as we all grow fat from the convenience of modern living. What if we devised a way to release and harness that energy to meet the demands of our modern lifestyles, at least in part?

The haves seem to loose all sense of proportion. Most creatures conserve energy.

A fish in a stream takes advantage of the slower eddies as a normative state. It doesn't constantly go full tilt boogie in the fast lane like people do. They don't try and secure and maintain the energy it takes to maintain the whole world at a constant 68 degrees. We attempt to transcend the limitations of our own creaturehood and in the process create local excesses or imbalances. We build on flood plains and steep hillsides. In many ways I think our energy deficiencies are a reflection of greedy copious consumption.
Just something to consider on our way forward, how rich must our diet be?

I read last night that the amount leaking inside the building was already twice the amount the designers designed it for.

    What a horrible disaster.

Earthquake, Tsunami, nuke meltdown and now a possible volcano eruption.

My heart goes out to the japanese people.

    +1

I've been trying to get onto the westboro baptist church's site since yesterday to see what those assholes have to say about this so I can replace the helplessness I feel right now with a little rage. Unfortunately the site seems to still be down for some reason. Lol!

I do not see very much difference between them and people saying we all deserve to be exterminated because of our sins against Giai.
