January Shelter Of Random Facts XLIV

of my uncles and aunts he the only one ive got some kind of a relationship with, the others are lost in their own ways.

 

My uncle was one of the organizers for Martin Luther King's march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965, and a supporter of Cesar Chavez and his organizing of migrant farmworkers in California. He was also a practicing and research dermatologist. His daughter, my cousin, is a sculptor. She has created public sculptures of - guess who? Yes - Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez - among others.

My dad was a vice president for the largest winery in the world, and a pioneer of what is now known as Just-In-Time manufacturing.

I love and respect them both. But I found some roots I never knew I had only after my uncle died, and I found out for the first time some of the things he had done in his life. I asked my dad, and it turned out that my dad was just learning for the first time also. What the hell.

But my uncle once took a poetry class from a semi-famous poet at the University of Rochester - Hyam Plutzik - and he gave a book of Plutzik's poetry to my dad, and I read that book lots of times growing up.

Truly awesome.

 

I can hardly believe my own roots sometimes. Here I sit, a dweeb on a bed in the midst of piles of shit - both literally and figuratively - in the midst of what has to be one of the greatest shit lives of all time. Maybe there will be more for me before my time has passed.

 

Maybe greatness skips a generation...like twins do...:hide:
