i hate cancer. my family members mostly succumb to lung cancer, from smoking on top of my PawPaw having worked in the shipyards. he came home covered in asbestos. back before they knew better. basically all of the family that lived in that house were lost because of the side effects of old navy shipyards. my grandmother had bone cancer that spread to her brain. shes the relative that we have been told her grandmother was choctaw or cherokee. i cant find any documents that support that though.

I am sorry for your loss. it would be nice if there were more money in philanthropy. some of the kids these days, not all of them, but some of them seem to be trying to do that. theres one, i think 15 years old, that came up with a cheap test (blood, i think) for pancreatic cancer. its just most people dont want to solve the problem for no profit. its like SIDS, theres no money in finding out why it happens. theres only money in throwing pharmaceuticals at a problem.

we all deal with loss differently. i tend to feel that the pain doesnt get "better" with time, it certainly doesnt go away, it gets tolerable. the closer a person is to you, the more that is true. its like a scar. it may heal, but the skin is still different there, it might still twinge when the weather is changing, especially the deeper it is. it is never gone. and so are the events of our lives, good, bad, indifferent; scarred upon us. by the time we escape it we are battle-worn, if we are lucky.

The John Deere? Not yet, I haven't had the time. I'm still split between the new house, this apartment and the lot where the old house was... It's an hour and a half drive from here to the new place so there's a 3 hour chunk of time every day I should be doing something other than driving. There's something about being spread to thin to get anything done. Most stuff doesn't even get started.

I'm the same way. My empathy levels are off the charts. I just have a hard time converying it, at times.

Thanks, T. Yes, he was a beautiful dog. He was a Shiba Inu, which is a Japanese breed. Basically, a miniature Akita.

    Sorry dude.

Losing my dog was one of my hardest things.

Still hurts years later. Miss her everyday. But she gave me great memories. And I learned a lot from her.

I'm sure Toto left you with some great memories. Save something-like a leash or a favorite play toy. You'll treasure it years later.

I'm so sorry, BBAD. Condolences from me, too. :grouphug:

Cancer is so insidious, robbing most people of everything (dignity and life) before they even get the chance to realize what is happening. What is even worse...like ML said (paraphrasing here)...since there isn't oodles of money to be made in solving curing cancer, there doesn't seem to be much interest in addressing that.

    Big pharma rules, huh...:(

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet"
And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge"
"Today Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

truth be told...they have used that money to make huge advances in cancer cures and research invaluable to the future generations.....breast cancer is a prime example....MANY breast cancer survivors waking around today...you can not deny it

    also prostate cancer...huge advances...undeniable advances

of course there is big money involved...have you any idea how much money a thousand genetic scientists make....they spend decades in school...they deserve a pay cheque

of course we are far from a cure for all cancer but there is good peopple dedicating their lives to it...of this i am certain

im not saying advances havent been made. they certainly have, but how much more could we know if there was more money being funneled into it? in finding the causes and links?
in finding a reliable preventative? eating healthy and not smoking is no guarantee, and if it turns out to be something ubiquitous in the modern diet (like HFCS for example) what do we do then?

im not really sure if im trying to make a point. i think its too hard for researchers to get funded, its certainly been too hard until recently to do some of the kinds of research that they need to do. and other kinds of research that now they can not legally do (gmo)
fund the scientists, not the bankers. people wonder why so few go into science, its because the money is in banking, and lawyering, and politicking. if research got some of that money i bet we would solve problems a lot faster. i think they need MORE money. more incentive. $200K no strings to the scientist that discovers a reliable cure. we piss away that much away when we sneeze in this country.

Thanks, Kevin:) I'm definitely gonna save some mementos. I have lots of pictures of him throughout the years, and I'll probably frame some of them. I'm gonna hold onto his harness and leash too. Also, and this may be a little creepy, I might get some of his fur out of the carpet and keep it in a bag or a jar or something; similar to keeping the cremated ashes of a loved one in an urn. If I put the fur in a jar though, I may just bury it in the yard and leave a marker, since we were unable to bury his body.

Regardless, I'm just glad he's not in pain anymore. It was tough seeing him get old and lose his senses.

Thanks, JJ. It's not an easy thing to lose a pet that's been in the family for ~16 years. Like I said before, it literally feels like my little brother died or something.

Thanks, Jen. It's a hard thing to get over. I don't think I'll ever have another pet.

When I had that fire last December I lost Koa, my dog and 6 out of my 7 cats. The humane society did a group cremation for me and they are all in the same urn. Well one of the cats was never found so I guess she will be there in spirit. I don't know what I may do with that urn... I'm not going to bury them here, the house is gone. I may bury the urn or just put it in a special place at the new house... I don't know. I did let the dog leashes be demolished with the house.(I lost the other dog, Thor in February 2012. Last year was a bad year for me and my animals) I guess my point is keeping a bit of fur and making a monument of some sort isn't creepy, or at least not to me it isn't.

I have a eulogy thread in the pets section of the forum... I started it as one for Thor and then after the fire I added the others. I know I'll see them all again when it's my turn to go, you know. But the hurt never goes away. I just can't dwell on it.
