Jail time, what to expect?

It is amazing how many chains these guys (guards) like to use. Today I went to the county building for a passport application (lost the old one). It's also where the courtrooms are. Seems like a lot of them. Anyway, a van pulls up and about 9 guys get out. they have waist chains with handcuffs at each side of the waist. No movement there. they had leg irons and they also were attached to each other by a long chain in groups of 4 and 5. Now you can't tell me all these dudes were totally dangerous. In the halls if they were moving a guy they made a big deal about moving the citizens away. Again, what are they thinking? Maybe it's just to control and humiliate the prisoners, I dunno.

On the other hand none of these guys looked like it was a big deal or difficult to walk with their ankles shackled. Practice maybe, I'm thinkink, based on some of the comments in this thread about how difficult van steps were.
