This is why I hate young kids who call themselves hippies: you think clothes make all the fucking difference. You won't be able to change a damn thing from the inside of the establishment, try that and you'll get fired, no questions asked. Get over yourself, you haven't grown up any more than most of the young wannabes here.

 

I went through this weird "grown up" stage about a year ago where I stopped smoking and drinking and disaproved of teenagers being teenagers and being so childish. Pretty much my attitude was that of a bitter 40 year old. It was weird. Then all of a sudden I was just myself again. Hmm. It seems your really trying to be something. Strange. Just let it flow.

 

Good, so you no longer dress like a stupid hippie.

But the dreads are hot.

When you get to that age, 16 or so, part of growing into an adult is finding out your identity. Trying different personas etc out to see what fits best. Some don't work out and you ditch them, and you look back and think "what the hell was I thinking!" Being a hippie may indeed be something you think that way about one day. But some personas stay. You say being a hippie is part of you - somehow I think that may resurface in some form. If that's what makes you feel happy and at home with yourself then keep doing it.

We all take on personas. There is a part of the city I live in where all the executive-type people live. All the men wear fawn coloured chino pants, chambray shirts and boat shoes. That is the casual uniform for the executive. We all conform to certain personas in one way or another.

I don't think anyone (particularly those around my age) should criticise We_All_Shine_On for doing something that they probably did when they were the same age. I'll shut up if you can honestly tell me you behaved like a 30 year old when you were 16. Hell, I still feel like I'm 16 most of the time.

lol the whole point of this was to say that even though I know that clothes dont make a person, I've transcended the style identity thing and I've reached that mental level of 'hippyness' that many of you claim to have reached and dont want any new joiners.

What I am saying is I no longer have to dress in my most unique of tastes, I'm okay with dressing in the clothes I like that aren't as rebellious. I'm saying I dont have to show anyone I'm a hippy anymore, well, this is hard to explain. ...
I never dressed for other ppl, or with how I look in mind. (trust me, if you had seen me on some days, you'd know I wasn't dressing for high scores from peer judges ) and I never wanted to SHOW people what style I had 'adopted" I didnt want to impress people with my hippyness, but I did show it I guess by not dressing like them... see what I mean, not a sheep but not a shepherd.... I wasnt like them but I wasnt on the other end of the spectrum JUST to say 'hey im better cuz I dont follow'
Now it's very simple.... nicely dressed.
I of course have kept my dreads, which I will soon be cutting... atleast this school year... prolly after grad pics are taken
It's all in my heart now, until later on in my life when I can be eccentric as I please, retired and living with the land

Ok I havent read all of the comments but most of them seem shocked and outraged... Like the audasity of her moving out of the fashion idea is so evil. By taking those steps to make more active a change then any of you dicks would even imagine doing, shes more hippie (in the actual sense rather than shallow)than you will ever be. Cause at the end of the day you have your rants and your witty one liners and you go to bed without changing a damn thing while shes decided to make a difference through the system and change what she can in a way that GETS THINGS DONE. Dont even bitch at me about protesting making a difference because I marched in Houston streets with the ABC and have been maced by riot cops for becoming "Unstable and violent" and "aproaching mob status." Protesting does NOTHING. I fuckin applaud her for growing up. I know exactly where shes coming from cause I did the same thing when I got into punk.
