Some sites do get busted . Lime wire got busted . If you log on to the site to get there soft ware you get a statement some thing like " your i.p. address has been recorded , log on again and you may face criminal charged " Some torrent sites are out side the USA where the laws are a bit different . Some of the torrent sites dont keep the files , there on the hard drives of ever one logged on to that system , i.e. file sharing .
p.s. From the forum on h33t a list of other torrent sites http://fr33sp33k.h33t.com/index.php?board=96.0

So if 2 criminals are having an argument. I'm supposed cheer for the criminal not wearing a "Gouvernemnt" logo??

Kimdot Com and the internet pirates are bunch of crooks
The gouvernment of New Zealand is a bunch of crooks.

You know given a choice between a fat crook and a skinny thief.... I'm going choose telling the person forcing me to choose to fuck off. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

So I'm not stealing and there's no excuse for it. If you don't like what Hollywood and the big corporate music industry does... Then don't watch or listen to their garbage. Instead do what I do.

I support indie bands. So I listen and buy their CDs
I support indie films. So I go to private cinemas and see indie films.

You believe that intellectual property can be guarded and charged for like that?

Obviously there should be protections, but not anywhere near our current system.

You know if this was a conversation about medicine I would agree with you.

In fact if you do some research about the patent and copyright laws on medicines.. Then see how many die each year from easily curable sickensses simply because they can't afford the medicines. You would be ready to vomit because of bullshit of big pharma's greed and lobbying. I don't see anyone screaming of even discussing the problem's with intellectual property rights on essential medicines.

But Megaupload wasn't about freedom of speech or helping other people. It's about fucking shitty Hollywood films, factory fabricated crap music like Lady Gaga and some mostly video game apps and some guy who had nothing to do with creating them making himself rich.

    So fuck it.
Kimdot com didn't take the money and give the it to a struggling artists, or to the poor in 3rd world nations and he certainly didn't create a site to publish corporate or gouverment secrets. All he did was take the money and spend it on himself and his friends.

In my eyes whatever argument of nobility or higher morality falls apart when you see his mansion and his toys. Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor... Kimdot Com just plain stole and kept it.

I think you mistook my post for being interested in what you do with your music, actually I just saw that you had posted about Kim Dotcom and Megaupload and wanted to add something interesting about him that is currently occuring in the news here where I am living.

I kind of think it goes without saying that if you support a local band you wouldn't rip off their music.

I don't care about kimdot com, or any of that shit. I think megaupload didn't do anything criminal (and that considering it as such sets a dangerous precedent. If you can lock that guy up for hosting files that other people uploaded, how about skip, for being brave enough to host all SORTS of unpopular opinions, the mere possession of which have nearly been painted into criminality?). But I'm not standing up for the guys making lots of money by facilitating piracy. On the other hand, I'm sure not going to side with the (considerably more insidious) RIAA and MPAA, protection-racket cartels who try to ransom cultural identity (and, of course, some movies or music are trash culture, some are not.... but those guys try to hold the reins of them all, and use them to get money from joe blo, for imaginary harms).

Copyright law it it's original form in the US was fine by me. But I don't think that intellectual property conglomerates and big business are acceptable, or good for the world.

I totally agree, medicine should not be subject to all that shit. But I don't think it should be countered by removing the laws about that. On one hand, big pharma is pretty much openly evil, on the other hand they do important work, and when they don't hide and lie about it, that's great. They should be heavily reined in and regulated, but they should be able to keep their patents, BECAUSE the US government should be the health care provider, I think we should have single-payer health insurance, and if things got too ludicrous and the government was paying for it, you KNOW they would find a way to sort that shit out.

It's only because of our archaic health care "system" that medicine falls under those laws, in any way that effects the consumer. So I don't see that it's part of the debate about "stealing" music or movies, at all.

On one hand, copyright should apply to all mediums because it's the same intellectual property. On the other hand, stealing a pattern of 1's and 0's is clearly nowhere in the same league as stealing physical property, and clearly doesn't do much of anything to hurt any business. There may be a business of selling digital music, but it's still not selling to pirates or would-be-pirates, and when it is, it's BECAUSE of their piracy (I have personally bought music I pirated, that I would not have bought if I had not first pirated it. I have never pirated music I bought, because I'd bought it. And if I had, it would have been fine, because I'd already fucking bought it). Current copyright law doesn't quite jibe with the reality of digital "property". There may be a difference here for software, which is DESIGNED to be data from the start, that's it's primary function. But for music, I don't think so.

All that said, I think that maybe at a certain level of popularity, music should be in the public domain, at least as far as individuals go. And I think that the worst penalty for "stealing" data should be that you have to either have all copies totally deleted, or pay the general going price for that data. This would condemn piracy, but make digital tyranny by corporate interests impractical and ineffectual, or really, impossible.

Old people writing laws under the direction of big business simply does NOT cut it, when it comes to regulating the digital world in a realistic and reasonable way.

I don't care what forum or site you go to on the Internet. They all lock threads, ban people, delete posts, etc. And it's just for some lousy electronic text. So from what I can see the only thing that gives the Internet an *illusion* of freedom of speech is porn. If if a site owner/admin is are the nicest and greatest guys on the earth.. I have to say I'm sorry because I'm just not in the habit of patting any site owner/admin on the back.

But I hear what you're saying

The reason any site like megaupload goes into business is because these guys see a chance to make money. And they're so greedy that they are willing to risk getting their asses kicked by some big godzilla sized organisation. In my opinion that means they deserve what they get.

I'm a lousy 4'10" and if somone offers me 20 bucks to spit in the face of a 7foot tall bull dyke. If I decide to do it... Then I have no right complaining if she beats the shit out of me.

For me freedom of speech is higher ideal and it only occurs when it's in person and when it's goal is to promote or aid the greater good. And frankly I really don't see a hell of a lot of that on the Internet.

I pay for my music. I either buy directly from the band or from iTunes. I used to pirate music, but I haven't had a computer for years. I was using Limewire with dial up Internet the last time I downloaded free music.

Of course people are banned. It's often surprising how long it takes. People like nz male just keep comming back, and nobody will really drop the banhammer on them for good, even with his constant threads and posts that hint strongly at pedophilia, (and, while he may not be able to help THAT aspect of himself) and what is essentially it's promotion and rationalization/justification. This is clearly NOT for the greater good, but, it's free speech to a point, and eventually mods get sick of him and give him another stint in the virtual slammer. I, personally, would have made it stick, a long time ago. Keeping order is not the same as limiting free speech. We're all different, and sometimes I disagree with thread lockings or bannings or whatever, but sometimes I disagree with the fact that they don't happen. I don't always agree with skip, but he's still doing a good thing, keeping HF up -- I won't say get out, because that would be like the "america, love it or leave it" BS, but I don't see that he does anything particularly negative, beyond running a website where people can talk about just about anything, from sex to drugs to sewing to far right/free market capitalism, to far left/socialist ideas, to sewing and crafts, to hairstyles.

You have a very narrow definition of free speech. Using your definition, speech of all sorts of importance is not free.

You also have a very peculiar way of seeing the internet. Speech is speech, be it in person, through a printing press, through a short-wave radio, or through a fibre-optics, like our speech here. Open forums of ideas are very important, and the internet gets rid of the inherent limitations that they experience in person. There is no reason that having more ideas espoused on a particular medium, makes all ideas on that medium any less important. There is no reason that a medium that allows the free and easy spread of ideas that otherwise could not reach a great audience, should be any less legitimate than any other. If you don't like the moderation, go make your own site, it's not hard, you can go sign up for FREE forums all over the place, and be your own moderator.

Moderation is important. Of course it's important that it be done with a fair and open mind, and that things not simply be deleted because they go against the norm, but I don't think that's any sort of problem on this website. It sounds like you just make a habit of whining about whoever's in charge, whatever their actual merits are. I've seen skip be, in my opinion, totally right, but also totally wrong, on a subject. I've resented his opinion and judgement in a few situations. That does not come even close to saying that hipforums is not full of true free speech, or that there is something wrong with it simply because people get banned and threads get closed. He's running the fucking thing, and you're participating on a voluntary basis, ON HIS BUCK. So, what the fuck?

As for your opinion of megaupload and the like, you seem to be saying that if someone without the best motives, but with considerably better motives than an evil giant that makes a business of terrorizing society, gets beat up by the evil giant, they deserved it, for having the audacity to.... not be as evil? Why? They wanted money, I'm pretty sure we all do, because our survival is directly tied to it, BECAUSE OF THE SOCIAL SITUATION CREATED BY THAT EVIL GIANT AND IT'S EVIL FRIENDS. How can you possibly blame them for that? It sounds like you're siding with the more evil of two evils, simply because, well, the lesser evil should have known better.

Your cynicism, if put into practice, would endanger all sorts of freedom. Let's think about the free software movement, or things like creative commons. They're on the internet, and as such can't be free speech, so they're not protected. So, let's let those aforementioned evil giants shut them down, because things like linux and free music directly hurt their profits. All those blogs teaching you how to set up your wireless or GPS in linux? Not free speech, because it does not serve a DIRECT political purpose. All those artists who give away their older work? Not free speech, because it's on the internet, where free speech can't happen.

Your definition of free speech would easily allow for the heavy censorship of the currently rather free exchange of information on the internet, because value is subjective (especially if those evil giants are the ones who get to determine the value). You cannot have some sort of system of deciding what's free speech based on how much you like it, or the whole concept of free speech is meaningless.

Freedom of speech is by definition protected speech. If all speech was protected speech then anyone trying to prevent someone from exercising their right to say literally anything would be criminally liabable. Pedophiles, hate speech, etc would all be allowed.

Freedom of speech is about serving the greater good and it must have something of substance.

    As for the Internet.
Come on man do you really believe that line of how free the Internet is? Sure there's a little bit here and there that have some redeeming value but for the most part there's not much substance to the net.

It's seriously negative with hoards of people that have nothing better to do but disagree for the sake of disagreeing and arguing because they're bord.

It's about conformity. Say something that everyone likes and you'll be rewarded with a like or thumbs up. It doesn't matter if you believe what you're saying or not.. just tow the popular line.

The Internet is also just give something for nothing.

It's a pickup bar, the majorty of all the social sites are nothing more than men looking for women.

It's a porn library and pornizing society. Forget tenderness and sensuality, today I'm expected to be a waxed slut that loves being choked and gang banged.

It's misogyny on steroids. Trust me as a woman I can say each day the number of guys that think I have less human value than furniture is growing.

It's about buying drugs, amo and stuff you couldn't normally get without a lot of questions being asked

And finally the Internet is about the United States controlling the way the world communicates. It's all about spying on everyone.
If the Internet is such this great force for good. Then why are there so many wars? Why is it with all this "instant information" we weren't able to avoid the bank collapse of 2008? Why are our rights and liberties under attack?

Sorry my friend the internet might be good for killing a few hours when you're bord but it's not really restoring good government or our freedom by it's massive access to information. In fact there's a lot more disinformation than has ever existed before.

You are very arrogant, and don't quite understand the nature of the internet.

It's a medium of conversation, humor, offence, and lots more. Not every conversation, especially those geared to offend because of boredom, is going to be particularly enlightening. But you can't limit it because it MIGHT not be enlightening, you have to wait and see.

You also make heavy use of straw-man arguments.

Also, free speech is generally free. It's when it's explicitly malicious and gets into scheming, that it's not free. You can say, "I think that everyone should have sex with little boys", like those NAMBLA fucks, and it IS protected. If you start telling people HOW to, as I think they did, it stops being so free, and starts getting you into trouble. If you say "I think all black people should be lynched", well, that's your opinion. It's a horrible one, but it's still your opinion. But if you start organizing meetings and offering to bring the rope, it stops being free.

You can say, death to all infidels, and it's free. But when you start saying that one person in particular needs to die for starting draw muhammad day, obama drops a hellfire missle on your ass. (like that awlaki fuck.... I'm conflicted, because I think he's somebody who should not be missed, but I still think that he needed a trial)

    See the differences here?

(I could be wrong about all this, I don't hate too many groups, other than those that are both evil and composed of voluntary members -- and I don't preach violence against anyone)

What have you personally said or done on the Internet that has ever amounted to anything noble or ultrastic? Unless you can say your name is Julien Assange or you run a charity of some sort..... Well I've been waiting more than 10 years for some sort of Internet induced enlightenment. And honstly from where I'm sitting, things have only gotten worse.

In summation I understand the nature of the Internet quite well I assure you. I speak from experience... I speak from observation of cause and effect...

If I canceled my Internet subscription tomorrow I would have to take up knitting for the times when I have nothing better to do. In fact at least then I would have something to show for my efforts. So if my refusal to klowtow the "Internet is the massiah" of the modern age portrays me to be the purveyor of superficial arguments, so be it.

In the end you say free speech is generally free. Well talk is cheap and you can't generally get much cheaper than free.

    Errr

80s just used to use a double cassette player or 2 VCRs

90s just ripped CDs and DVDs

It is kind of harder in a way nowadays for rare or old stuff, there are far less video stores which have less and some movies, albums are just not on torrent sites

Try getting the original version of the original Star wars trilogy as an example, cant find a copy anywhere and the torrent only has a few seeds

I should have put the two closer together:

You don't understand the nature of the internet, or the nature of free speech.

Simply because one is unable to elicit a direct, obvious response, with free speech, does not make it any less important.

The nature of the internet is 98% pure shit.

It's colonizing technology with the United States at the center of it.
American culture and ideals are directly streamed into the homes of non-americans.
It's United States domination and control of communications.
All the big search engines and social media sites are american
It's the United States declaring war on sexuality.
The United States does nothing to enforce 2257 documentation requirements or enforce its obsecenity laws for anything Internet based. End result is women are less human today than we were in the 1950s. (I can't tell you how many men won't go out with me if they find out my vagina isn't shave bald like a 5 year old)
It's you see only what the Media Control Complex wants you to see
Tailored content delivery systems, GEOIP technology and directed traffic ensure this fact.
It's farming of the popular opinion.
Persona management software and security companies based in Montana that ridicule disent while promoting the agenda of their clients
All the rest is people killing time (like me) and ha ha.. pic?... A/S/L... conspiracy theories... save the Internet... some poor sucking trying to a few nickles while pretending to be rich.... etc etc etc.

It makes me wonder how much the Internet is fault for the reason the United States is on verge of collapse. Because of all that investement into control and surveillance has got to be creating paranoia in gouvernment circles and costing a fortune to maintain. I can't even imagine how many new ennemies the Internet creates each day.

    When you think about it,
This kind of puts a whole new face on the legend of the tower of Babel.
