You feel all those different sensations! Ya get yer feet dirty (don't care what Mom told'ja). Yer doin' somethin' different. It just feels so great to have all that sensory input--hot, cold, sticky, stony, grassy--that you never have with shoes. Golly, goin' barefoot is about the best fun a body could have!!

That is so true! I love the various sensations on my soles. Even although my soles are quite tough from years of barefooting I still feel everything. :)

Do you still find walking on gravel uncomfortable? I don’t know if I will ever get comfortable with extended walking over gravel.

IMG_1405.jpeg IMG_1403.jpeg Here are two challenging surfaces for my feet. I have walked the chunky mulch trail several times, but I still find it uncomfortable, tolerable as long as I go at a moderate pace. I find the gravel painful and cannot walk more than 20 or 30 steps.
I don’t encounter gravel often but mulch is common and hiking trails are similar in texture.
Do you long time barefoot walkers find these two surfaces comparable to walk on? Could you walk for hours on either without pain?

Pretty much. Mulch is more fun, and rocks are what Life is all about! Gotta get thru them!! Do them both after a soaking rain and see how wonderful they FEEL.

I don't think I would have any problems walking barefoot on that gravel or mulch. My soles are like leather!

I walk on that all the time gravel was the first thing I got use to and then everything else . Where I would go fishing the trail was all gravel and I would walk two miles each way

Went for a barefoot walk in the park today, it was wonderful as usual. I tried the hard wood mulch trail which I have walked a few times and my feet were just having none of it today. I feel a little discouraged, I hope I am not too old for my feet to adjust to rough surfaces. I did well on the pea gravel they use on little league baseball diamonds and did fine. Any toughening suggestions?
