There are many MANY natural supplements & vitamins that you could take instead of eating a bloody baby sac. That plus some good rest after hours of child birth would be probably be just as good, and a million times less disgusting.

Um no. The placenta is connected to the uterus wall which connects to the umbilical cord which is connected to the baby.

The baby lives inside the uterus

And the placenta also acts as waste management. So nom nom nom

I have not done it, but I think people eating placenta after birth is beautiful. Many cultures have done this since time imemorial and I agree its pretty knarly but have a lot of respect for their wisdom...and I don't eat my menstral blood but I dilute it sometimes and put it in my plants- it's REALLY good for helping them grow really healthy.

...I just figure why not use what you got.

Personally I don't see what's nasty at all. Why take a bunch of drugs or supplements to achieve what can be done much more efficiently by taking the placenta in capsule form. I imagine we've all eat worse without knowing it.

    On Placenta,

"Fetomaternal organ of metabolic interchange between the embryo or fetus and mother. It has a portion of embryonic origin, derived from a highly developed area of the outermost embryonic membrane (chorion frondosum), and a maternal portion formed by a modification of the part of the uterine mucosa (decidua basalis) in which the chorionic vesicle is implanted. Within the placenta, the chorionic villi, with their contained capillaries carrying blood of the embryonic circulation, are exposed to maternal blood in the intervillous spaces in which the villi lie; no direct mixing of fetal and maternal blood occurs, but the intervening tissue (the placental membrane) is sufficiently thin to permit the absorption of nutritive materials, oxygen, and some harmful substances, like viruses, into the fetal blood and the release of carbon dioxide and nitrogenous waste from it. At term, the human placenta is disc shaped, about 4 cm in thickness and 18 cm in diameter, and averages about 1/6–1/7 the weight of the fetus; its fetal surface is smooth, being formed by the adherent amnion, with the umbilical cord normally attached near its center; the maternal surface of a detached placenta is rough because of the torn decidual tissue adhering to the chorion and shows lobular elevations called cotyledons or lobes."

The placenta is everything.... it's separates everything from the mom and baby. And yes Pat, you are quite right. They don't live "in it" but beside it. I can't imagine you knew all that off teh top of your head Pat. And if you did, how do you know so much about placenta? lol The amniotic sac is what separates the fluids from baby and mom, but it's the placenta through which everything passes. It is sac like and you can flip it inside and out.

I'm still giggling at how gross many peeps on here think it is. So much talk about natural being gross all of a sudden. lol I thought that one head dread was gross and everyone was talking about how natural that was and thought it was cool. ah well. :)

Whats wrong with a little autocannibalism. I occasionally eat my fingernails, random bits of dead skin, and immediately suck on a new wound. Don't see how that's any different from eating other bits. Plus I imagine eating ones placenta would be a bonding/spiritual experience for some people. It's obviously a lot more than replenishing nutrients, people seem to forget the symbolic side of ritual and focus more on the functional aspects.

Some people bond with their babies by spending time with them.. and it's only my opinion but I don't find there to be anything spiritual about eating..that. Maybe I'm lacking the motherly view on this one seeing that I'm not one.. but I don't think I'll ever change how my opinion on eating the placenta after birth :/ I'll stick to my veggies N fruits.

    * I didn't mean to insult you mamaJ, i just wasn't expecting to see that on your home page. Caught me off guard  *

    edit: I'm a veggi any way :p

How would eating a placenta help bonding? Surely to bond with a child you BF etc. I'm with Chaos on this. I wouldn't eat it either, No offence.

I'm not sure if eating it would help you bond with the babe. You do feel drained after having a baby though as people are constantly visiting and you get barely any sleep and bf at the start is a bitch! so I can understand why someone would eat it to get their energy levels up.

Fair enough! If the time ever came for me though I'd just let husband deal with everyone/thing for a couple o days. He won't mind after all, not him thats shooting out a baby out of a 10cm hole.
