like anything else, it depends to a large extent on what you do with it. the desire to create is the only observable thing that distinguishes the human species from those other life forms which also posses a central nervious system with which we share this planet. all other observable distinctions, principally the degree to which we surround ourselves with our artifacts, result from it.

every shaired belief, began with someone talking or writing about it. charismatic personalities, or small groups of concerned and responsible individuals trying to convince the generality of their peers not to screw everything up for each other.

even the priorities people don't think about often come from between the lines of the stories they are entertained by.
the phrase "personal development" is one of those "dialectic" ones, that everyone is expected to start responding to like pavlov's dog and his little bell.

the only "personal development" is the increased accumulation, over time, of reference data, and incrimental improvement of personal intellectual tools with which to analyze and draw meaning from it.

I believe so. If you're speaking of creative or personal writing of course.

I guess writing applicably could too in a sense. Say if you're writing a term paper or any sort of educational work. Developing one's mental skills.

Probably not writing of ANY kind, but I'd say that virtually all forms of writing practiced are unequivocably good for personal development; exercises the brain, is creative, detail oriented, and is a good life skill.

    Yes,

I experimented with writing while in College, mainly after getting into the Tao Te Ching, Alan Watts, etc. I have a lot of that type of stuff laying around that I wrote, re-wrote, and rewrote again. I've never been totally pleased with the results as I always had something to add or I'd find a flaw in it somewhere.
But I used to use it to collect and analyze my thoughts.

Then I got into offset printing and discovered word processing (way back when) and desktop publishing. That was great as I got to write a bunch of stuff and also edit others material before I printed it...my spelling really improved as that was always a weakness of mine. I was usually the first to sit down in the spelling bees in grade school as I rebelled against the logic of spelling...I mean K-nee? Before spell checkers I had a little pocket speller and another little grammar checker I kept in my desk.

Now I post stuff here as it keeps my mind active, I like to do research and then try and present what I find in a coherent manner.
    Sometimes it works.

it might be painful if you have arthritis, but otherwise it seems mostly harmless.
unless you write to tell people to hate and get it published.
or do so on the net. that would be harmful.

As the saying goes, 'Reading makes a full man, writing makes an exact man and conference makes a ready man.'

Writing a diary helped me to record my character flaws or shortcomings and the possible reasons for it so that I could avoid them later and bring about a degree of exactitude. It helped me to maintain an orderly thought process which has been very valuable to me.

Similarly I keep a pocketbook or papers with me as much as possible to note ideas and points that come to me whereever I am, even at odd places.

    Rainbows of Beautiful Words

The Paradox of our Existence, defying all attempts at explanation!
Words may never be false when truer words can never be spoken!
Egos attempt to own each word as if they were merely property!
When if we simply surrender to words we set them free at last!
Defying unbalanced gravity, beautiful words all hang in the air,
When uglier words, will often fall straight through the floor!
For words alone escape me by my merely telling the truth!
Whilst predictable words of our hate, anger, and sorrow!
Will all return that much sooner to the singular source!
For all our words to fly like the birds, they must sing!
Hearts alone can know the Truth when they hear it!
Hearts alone can raise our words, to great heights!
So I tell people, if they want their words to sing!
They must learn how to set their screams free!
For all singing, is about controlled screaming!
The best singers, delighting in their screams!
(As much as anything else that might come out of their mouths)
Still providing them, with new opportunities to sing something!
If your words don't come from your heart they cannot quite sing!
Because everybody's heart may sing never uttering a single sound!
Being authentic, birds gotta fly, fish gotta swim!
    Not because, they merely have nothing better to do;
But because they desire it, and own it for themselves.
They all set themselves free to just do, be, and become!
If you can never express how it is you might really feel!
If you struggle all the time to get the words to come out!
Practice running round in circles, screaming and shouting!
Bouncing off one another as if we are all made of rubber!
Rediscover for yourself what gentle laughter is all about!
I am a Warrior of the Rainbow speaking beautiful words,
Who would look, act, and speak the part harmoniously!
To speak the words, all wish to speak from their heart!
To the best of their idiosyncratic ability and capacity!
I shall fight the truth of my words no more forever!
Seeking beautiful words, that may break the spell!
Rainbow Warrior words being authentic means,
Set your love free and your words will follow!
Freeing your mind we may all free our words,
Honoring words, as having a life of their own.
Honoring our words, setting them free at last!
    Honoring ourselves, thus, inspiring ourselves!
Honoring our words by never clutching words!
    Thus becoming as beautiful, both outside as in;
Becoming who we are deep in our own hearts!
Never allowing anything to stop us sharing love!
Never allowing another, to become between us!
Never allowing any to come between our hearts!
Desiring only to inspire ourselves before others!
Desiring to become, as we want others to see us!
Desiring to help each other, set themselves free!
Testifying to Rainbow Family Tribe's greatest love!
Testifying, to great beauty and humor in anything!
Righteous Rainbow Warriors, Rise to the occasion!
Rise to the occasion making greater contributions!
Rise to the occasion, and discover your own voices!
Rise to the occasion speak for those with no voices!
Never underestimate, your own ability to contribute!
Never underestimate the power of our stupid poetry!
Never underestimate, the truth beyond all mortal ken!
Never underestimate what each other can accomplish!
Never underestimate, the Ugly Duckling's good fortune!
Never underestimate the songs in anyone's loving heart!
Actualize the potential, of our One shared greater Truth!
    The spark of life yet abides within the mother of all voids;
Even though all my life I've never known if there is a God,
I can honestly say, the only thing I know is I know nothing.
Pretty surprised to this day to discover myself still listening,
To delightfully beautiful Rainbow Warrior words, within me!
Beautiful words expressing what can never be put into words!
Sometimes the faces of God promenading around me will speak!
Namaste, Namaste, Namaste I celebrate the universe within me!
Though once I was blind now I see, an amazing grace follows me!
Rainbows of beautiful words accompanying me wherever I may go!
Followed by mama's delightful silent laughter lilting in the distance...
