"It is ironic that Einstein's most creative work, the general theory of relativity, should boil down to conceptualizing space as a medium when his original premise [in special relativity] was that no such medium existed [..] The word 'ether' has extremely negative connotations in theoretical physics because of its past association with opposition to relativity. This is unfortunate because, stripped of these connotations, it rather nicely captures the way most physicists actually think about the vacuum. . . . Relativity actually says nothing about the existence or nonexistence of matter pervading the universe, only that any such matter must have relativistic symmetry. [..] It turns out that such matter exists. About the time relativity was becoming accepted, studies of radioactivity began showing that the empty vacuum of space had spectroscopic structure similar to that of ordinary quantum solids and fluids. Subsequent studies with large particle accelerators have now led us to understand that space is more like a piece of window glass than ideal Newtonian emptiness. It is filled with 'stuff' that is normally transparent but can be made visible by hitting it sufficiently hard to knock out a part. The modern concept of the vacuum of space, confirmed every day by experiment, is a relativistic ether. But we do not call it this because it is taboo." Robert B. Laughlin, Nobel Laureate in Physics What do people think? I feel that the Aether is the "stuff" that allows non-local manifestation to take place; something that Einsten used to call "spooky action-at-a-distance".
To me, the Ether is the electromagnetic glue that binds all matter into consciousness. Unfortunately, the answer you seek is going to be relayed as the scientists describe it. Why? Because no one really knows anything past what we "see"; so we trust science to explain it to us without being scary or mystical about it. or It is what we imagine it to be; that is the whole point to reality; Transfer our perception unto our reality. Maybe that is the point of Ether, to make a smooth transition from mind to perception. Can they please move on from Newton and Einstein; although equally brilliant, they are outdated.
"spooky-action-at-a- distance...." Cause and effect principle again...... the rippling effect..... a flower knows not how far its fragrance reaches kind of thing...... listen to your own instincts..... If something feels wrong, maybe you are focusing on the wrong things being wrong, and have totally missed what you should be focusing on...i speak in riddles....I know.... I have had fear for quite a awhile now....of being stalked , watched.....and my instincts are always spot on.....as much as anyone wants to call me paranoid or poo poo me....but I have thought it was comoing from innocents, i think.....when the real danger was from someone I never thought in a million years would still be stalking me...they moved in under my mom the last year after she was alive...i thought it strange then....and I saw the mof tonight passing by in a car....driving....WTF is he doing here??????!!!!!!!!
That's an interesting definition of Aether. If (or when, rather) gravitational waves are detected, the term Aether may be once again used in casual discussion (to account for the new arena in which the waves take place...) though obviously not in the sense that the term was used in the Michaelson-Morley Experiment. Unfortunately, there is stigma against the term as the original idea is usually mentioned in Undergrad Physics textbooks which treat the whole thing as a history lesson rather than showing mathematical proofs of why there is no aether. What do you mean by "electromagnetic glue"?
To answer your question: I envision the Universe much the same as an atom, albeit on a grander scale; with its' basic laws: yet with given freedom to 'develop'. The Universal Nucleus surrounded by the Elec current; constantly keeping us enclosed and balanced. If the deepness is sought after; we can see the imbalance of the Earth and the ways she corrects that imbalance through Natural Disasters; Universally we see the 'freedom to develop' with new Galaxies, exploding stars and Blackholes. The latter is in the belief that they exist; whether they pose as the garbage disposal system or in a creating sense. That is up to the individual to decide. Newtons 3rd law; Action=reaction. The Universe as a whole is just that, a balancing act; the Ether keeps the stability
