I dont think the Peace sign is outdated. It is a symbol that everyone can regconize in todays society. When people see it they immediatly know what it means and what it stands for. Why change it now? People may not even know what it stands for if we change the symbol. Its not what the symbol looks like that matters. The symbol coud look like virtulally anything. The only thing that matters is what it stands for. So why change a universallly recognizable symbol of peace and love?
Why debate on what symol to use? If you want to do your own thing then i highly recomend it. But just remeber, its just a symbol. Its what you do that counts not what we ware and stuff. becides i like the peace symbol. It reminds me of what we can accomplish. much love to all
Personally, I like the peace symbol. But, I don't know how it came about...? Quite embarrassing. How did it come about?
It was the symbol for the "Nuclear Disarmament Campaign" and then it just evoluved into a symbol of peace.
The peace symbol was origonaly a arrow pointing down cercled (Stateing) "down with nuckes" it transformed to what we know now as the peace symbol, there are other sybols of peace, most popular the dove in religous stuff, but the other sybol is cooler dont you think?
This is an interesting point. Maybe we should have a group activity. We should all design a new peace sign. A new sign of our revolution (whatever it may be). What is the most important issue? Let's first decide on the message.. should it be peace? Should it be knowledge? What should it be? I personally believe that peace is a great goal; however, I believe (as I just said in another thread) Censorship is the at the heart of everything that's harmful right now. Maybe power to the people is in store? What should we fight for?
Bah, what's the point of changing the peace sign? It's cool and symbolises peace. Everybody recongnises it. The problem is the people who assotiate peace to the 60's... peace should be universal and without any cultural references. It should only refer to a utopian state of life in society. I used to think about hippies when I saw a peace sign... but I've grown up.
I'm not saying to change the peace sign (I don't know if the original poster was either). I do think that in all the world's craziness, there must be something specific we should be fighting for.
The peace sign is definitly NOT outdated ya fuckin' tard. where would you come up with that? it will never be outdated. gah, dinglefuck. the 60s are my most cherished era. i would give anything to go back in time. i would definitly try to bang jim morrisson..yummy.
Or maybe we should ask if 'peace' is outdated. There used to be peace logos on people's cars decades ago. Now people put stickers on their cars supporting the latest invasion. I saw one bumper sticker that said, "Support Our Troops Wherever They May Go!" and it wasn't meant to be joke either. Gee, that's great. Wherever they may go. Wherever! .
Acually the Peace symbol "was designed and completed February 21, 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a commercial designer and artist in Britain. He had been commissioned by the Campain for Nuclear Disarment to design a symbol for use at an Easter march to Canterbury Cathedral in protest against the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England. The symbol itself is a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for Nuclear Disarmament. In semaphore the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. These two signals imposed over each other form the shape of the peace symbol. In the original design the lines widened at the edge of the circle."(Wikipedia)
hmm interesting thank you for clearing that up. I had read a book on sybols and thats were i got my info but i def trust wikipedia over anything heh much love and PEACE to all heh (we dont need any sybols. we need souls who are willing to give and work together.)
I think (correct me if I have made any mistakes) that Winston Churchill started the hand gesture as meaning "V for Victory", during WWII, as the symbol looks like a 'V'. Maybe it was a way of, ummm, I don't know how to explain this LOL. A way of dis-crediting the war? That's not the word I'm really looking for, but the best I can think of. =) I'm a bit undecided on this symbol... Lately, I don't know if it is just here in Australia, there has been a fashion resurgal (is that a word? =S) of peace symbols and all these "protest" t-shirts, which are being sold by the thousands all over the place. Support and "opinions" shouldn't be made into a fashion statement. (Sorry, I'm rambling)
I still wear a peace symbol necklace, as well as a peace symbol ring on a chain that my namesake got from Jimi Hendrix.
