As a law abiding citizen of the UK, I'm no gun expert. In fact, I've never even touched a real gun let alone fire one. While we have a few occasional needless fatal shootings from criminals with illegal firearms, it's nowhere near the extent of homicides and mass murder by guns like in th US. In fact, If you look at the stats the majority of countries with gun homicide problems are virtually all in the Americas (north and south).

So where do you start trying to solve a problem on this scale? Banning guns and attempting to remove them would be impossible for the sheer amount of guns there are in circulation and the resistance you will come up against. However, I think most will agree, something must be done. When you have kids been mass murdered by some psycho with a chip on his shoulder and now kids themselves murdering adults over videogames, any sane citizen cannot be ok with this, surely?

Because criminals have them. If one came to your house and started shooting at you, wouldn't you want something of equal strength to fight back with? It doesn't matter what laws we have, the only ones it will hurt will be the law abiding citizens. Criminals will always have guns. Plus, several of the so called "assualt rifles" are used for hunting also and just for shooting competitions. Also, if we ever get invaded, it won't be just the military fighting the enemy like some countries have. That's why our forefathers put in an admendement that it was our right to "bear arms" in case of in invasion.

I've got more than one thing bouncing around in my brain on this topic:

I'm interested reading some of the UK folks thoughts on USA gun laws and lawlessness... it strikes me quite profoundly whenever I see reports on the Royal Family, for example - the clips of Queen Elizabeth walking along a greeting line in the public, and most recently King Charles greeting mourners - and the relative ease with which they seem to move about - open and in the public - I don't know or pretend to know what the security measures are - but here, in the USA, our president cannot take those risks - he is hidden behind a beast of an armored vehicle when he goes out in public - he moves quickly to secure places - rarely mingling with real people.

I am not a gun lover - however, I have a rifle under my bed, in a case - it was my father's hunting rifle - I've never fired it. It's just a sentimental thing. nobody knows it is there - there are no bullets here. Should it be locked away more securely or discarded?

I had a good friend whose son died at the hands of a friend playing with a gun in the home - I'll never forget that 13-year-old boy - a tragic accident.

We don't seem to know how to be smart here - the fanatical need to have a right to carry a gun, to own a gun, and to protect that right seems to be totally lost in the absurd number of deaths - by accident - at least one daily - not to mention the nut jobs with a chip on their shoulder that decides to target a grocery store two hours' drive from their home, or go to a movie theater or to a Bible Study or to a concert, or a mall, or for Fucks' sake, a school, and open fire on the people who are there... when will that madness stop? Illegal traffic of guns, stolen weapons, careless storage of your gun, or weapons of so-called mass destruction...
all comes back to my brain "why do you need this gun?"

If someone gets shot by a gun on accident, its not the guns fault. That is lack of training and respect for the gun. A loaded gun should never be just laying around.
Plus, I bet if someone came to your door tonight, and broke in, i bet you wouldn't just sit there and let him attack your family or ransack your house. If he had a gun I bet you would wish that the gun under you bed had bullets.

Explain to me how that is so stupid? Do you believe that a person that shoots multiple people is sane?

No, it is not the gun's fault. but how does that logic carry? it's not typically a car's fault when someone dies in a car accident, either... why do you need a gun? I know why I need a car and I try to drive safely every time I use it... If I am caught driving recklessly, I am fined, or worse.
As far as wishing I had bullets if an intruder came into my home to do me or my family harm? No - I would not because that would not be my first line of defense - to shoot him with that gun. That argument also has not been proven to work completely effectively in many cases, either.

The car wouldn't hurt anyone either if its not running or driven correctly. Goes back to training and no letting someone have one if they don't know how to drive.

Of course the US had a lot more rules, permits and inspections for car ownership. For guns almost zip. Also, cars are not designed to cause the maximum amount of death and have a really long list of positive uses.

For many years I was a forester in the field and I often carried a gun and hunted in my spare time. No assault rifles, no 30 shot clips, no body armor, no concealed carry, no Rambo attitude…just training and careful use.

30 shot clips? Is that all?? 100 shot clips and bump stocks are everywhere - my fave is when they can't sell the gun retail, but they can buy all the pieces or get one at a gun show / swap as long as they pay sales tax on it.... Well, we have the largest armed force in the world, the general population....

All the more reason why the parents who are not vigilant at all should be locked away when the child does access it and kills people.

    Agreed, 100%.

The kids MUST be protected from guns not only at school (or anywhere else, for that matter) but, also, at HOME!

The way things are going these days, regarding senseless gun violence, we do not have to worry about tomorrow, because we are killing it off TODAY!

    ......so senseless and tragic.

WHAT is WRONG with people today??

I'll tell you this....if I had kids, AND had a gun in the house (which, in real life, would NEVER happen) I would keep the gun UNLOADED, and LOCKED in a strong box, where only I had access to it.

Man, this senseless violence just infuriates me......

Well, essentially, it just comes down to so many people just don't give a shit about much and it certainly shows with their poor parenting. There is no sense of accountability anywhere now.

It's all about "passing the buck", and placing the blame ANYWHERE, except where it does not belong.

Too many people these days claim they are "hearing voices" that are telling them to KILL.

I just heard of a shooting at a Wal-Mart earlier today (did not catch the location)

When one can't even send their children to school, or even go shopping, or attend a religious service, without fear that some maniac is going to start blasting away, slaughtering innocent people, it truly signals that we are living in a VERY barbaric, insane world......and it ONLY keeps on getting worse........God help us all, especially the young ones.......

Well, yes, certainly, there are millions of guns in America; no doubt. How many of these weapons are "problem guns", likely to be used in an accident or an assault? How would one make this distinction?

Actor Alex Baldwin has been charged with a crime for accidently shooting a fellow actor, on-set with a live weapon. What happened to the prop gun?
