So my Knotty Boy dreadlock shampoo just came in the mail, and I was wondering if my dreads are at a good enough state in which they could be washed??? What are some tips for washing?? Thanks! Here's a picture.. if you want to watch my dread growth, here is a link to the thread in which I'm posting updates.. :) :)

Oh noes! How have you not been washing?

You are good to use your soap. Though I'm sure most here will agree that Knotty Boy is kinda over priced and not necessary.

I've been using a saltwater mixture :) Yeah it was pricey, but I figured it would last awhile and I had a Amazon giftcard so I figured I'd just give it a shot! Thank you ^.^

Unfortunately, it'd be a little difficult for me to dilute it as I'm using a soap bar..! D: Thanks though.. any ideas on how to dilute it then or do you think I'll be fine?

I think Glen was getting confused with Dr.Bronners, a castile soap that requires a lot of dilution.

Be careful with the bar soap - for one it burns if you get it in your eyes, but also it's very difficult to gauge your usage. With dreadlocks you really only need to apply soap to your scalp. The oil doesn't get all over your hair in the same way as it would if your hair wasn't locked. So on the one hand that means that dreadlocks rarely look super greasy... but on the other hand it does mean that all the grease that would otherwise be spread out over your hair is concentrated onto your scalp. So you'll want to get the soap rubbed into your scalp and then it'll rise down over the dreadlocks and the soap that runs down should be sufficient to wash the dreads. You can supplement the washing schedule with monthly/bi-monthly deep cleans if you wish which will clean right through the dreadlock itself as well as remove any left over soap stuck in them.

Back to the bar soap - ok so it's hard to tell how much you're using. With a liquid soap you can pour out what you want and if after the wash you realise you've used too much.. you can use less next time, it's not so easy with bar soap. First you're going to want to resist the urge to take the bar and scrub it against your head and hair. You'll have no idea how much soap you've used, more will get melted off the bar from the water and chances are you'll end up using waaaay too much. The more soap you use, the longer it takes to rinse it all out. So if you use too much, chances are you won't bother to stay in the shower long enough to rinse it all out and it'll start to get left behind in the dreads a buildup. So when the bar soap it's recommendable to take the soap, lather it up in your hands and then take your hands to your scalp, rather than take the soap directly to your scalp. You'll have more control over the amount of soap you're applying and your soap will last longer as a result.

A great answer, thank you so much. I'll be sure to keep this in mind. I was careful to only apply to my scalp however I did get it in my eyes and it burned like hell! Less than regular shampoo does though.. :) Thanks again
