And a farmer's crop can die and a hunter/gatherer can break his legs. I have money and farmers can grow crops. Neither of us is worse off than the other until Canadian society collapses and the country is plunged into chaos. Hopefully it's not the zombies' doing. Those guys freak me out.

We're all slaves. Slaves to oxygen. Think about it, look around you with your eyes open wide, maan. If something happens and there isn't any oxygen anymore we're fucked.

If it's a deadly insect like a black widow or a grey recluse then yeah.

Im a vegetarian and think along the lines of a average vegetarian... I try my best not to kill animals/insects or to somehow get into situations where I have to kill animals/insects

recently I have been killing alot mosquitos due to them approaching me with the intention of sucking my blood(i don't mind insects taking alittle bit of my blood ... I DO mind insects leaving massive bruising and potentially giving me life threating infections thus why I kill them)

The reason does not justify the action .. and it would not hold up in a court of insect law.

I don't kill insects except for that time when I had a fruit fly infestation at my house. As for animals, I don't think it's right to kill any animal. I may be a hypocrite since I'm not a vegetarian. I will admit, meat tastes good and I don't like many vegetables. But there are so many animals out there that get killed every day and end up going to waste. A cow get's killed and you don't care for the meat properly and it goes bad, so you throw it out. I eat meat because that is my way of helping it not go to waste. Yes, that is my lame excuse. However, I think that if anyone plans on killing anything, you better eat what you kill. So you kill a deer, you better eat it and let it be the best meal you ever have. Even if you kill a pig, cow, mosquito, spider, or even a human, don't kill anything unless you plan on eating it. =)

I hear what you are saying .. but if a animal or insect is threating your life .. and you give it a warning not to come near .. and it continues to try and attack you ... you are left with little or no choice in regards defence.

I know a lot of people think like that, but it seems to me to be a bizarre rationalization. Isn't it a little bit like saying it's OK to kill someone, as long as you take their clothes and wallet? I mean, you wouldn't want to waste anything.

I don't know -- this "great circle of life" argument, it just totally ignores the ethics of killing, the value of life, and the choice we have in the matter.

I'd say that it's okay to kill certain animals for FOOD only. Killing animals for the purpose of fashion or sport is pointless and does more harm than good (whether the hunter pays to hunt the animal or not).

And killing an animal for food is fine IF it is done in a humane manner. Slaughterhouses should be routinely be inspected to make sure they don't make the animals suffer and that the conditions are sanitary.

We humans are obvious natural hypocrites. I hate to see animals die (Veggie), but put a spider in front of me and the poor bastard will undeniably bite the dust.

Maybe so Loretta, but remember that killing IS a natural instinct (even for animals) when feeling threatened.

If you had a gun with one shot and a lion charging you, would you feel sorry for the lion, or shoot to save your life?

it is imperative to kill certain animals to protect others.

see rabbits destroying natural rangeland in australia.

or feral horses in north america.

What is the bore of the gun, and how well do you shoot?

firing at the lion might be futile. And in effect, your mind may be made up for you.

Then equally, the lion will bite the dust also :p

Point I was making, is fear is something that would drive me to kill, and only that. As I am scared of spiders, I am sure a lion coming at me would ensure similar emotions. I mean, I wouldn't shoot this gun it the creature was docile.

People do live double standards mind you. Some creatures seem to be more favored than others. I would feel pretty pissed off I was an ant in the grand scheme of things, people have no hesitation when it comes to insect torture.

Or at least, some don't. I.e, my younger brother.

I would definitely kill an animal in self-defense. Any animal. But that's not where the interesting ethical issue lies. Is it right to kill an animal simply for your own convenience and comfort? I say no.

This pretty much is my exact view on the issue also.

I'm like this as well. I'm scared of spiders though, so just approaching it to kill it would be a problem! Small ones...I can just about approach, but if I saw one of those big ones, I wouldn't be able to go near it. Hopefully I never find myself in that position! :p

LOL … LOL … So for those that lost the plot, here is a reminder:

“Hip Forums > Activism > Animal Advocates Support

This is a peaceful forum offering support to animal advocates and veg*ns. If you're here to flame or argue, please go elsewhere. Thank you.”

But anyway, freediver and other peeps showing concern for the insects, there are various active campaigns, you just need to, well, in all fairness, educate yourself before commenting. Food Sovereignty organisations like La Via Campesina, various farmer groups and agricultural / environmental organisations are heavily involved in campaigns that are focused on insect protection and breeding. Insects are crucial to any natural biosphere, whether it be greens-paces in urban areas or more effective farming methods in rural areas.

And what’s with al this ‘when is ok to kill’ weird reasoning … murder is murder … self defence is self defence

    One Love!

Do you really think the only pigs and cows in the en tire world are currently domesticated? There are plenty ofthem that humans have not tainted who dont need us to support us.... that said PETA is ridiculous, but I don't think that not eating animals would be more inhumane...
