If Hippyism is a religion then I see it (as others have said) as a way of getting back to the real spitituality of the Earth and Nature, and what I really want to do now is to find out more about the natural world so that I can appreciate and love it and respect it properly. Mitao
Well, Templedragon, very interesting and a lot to consider before I respond in full (if I remember, amigo) but I'll say this: When you ask me to prove (and define how you mean the word proof, it has more than one meaning) "The universe is the way it is simply because it is the way it is" is like saying "prove air is the way it is." I don't know how to go about that since I consider the statement to have null content. When I say "the universe is..." I mean that there IS no explanation for the universe. There is an explanation for it's expansion, contraction, physical properties, etc. although we may not know what the explanations are yet. All we can do is identify the phenomena. Does there have to be a reason for the universe? I don't believe so. That is my assertion. Can one prove it, or it's antithesis? I don't believe so. But faith doesn't enter into that belief. If I asserted that there must be a reason for the existence of the universe, but have no way to identify such a reason, that would be, to me, faith. Tricky stuff, this, because until terms are defined in a way that is acceptible to both (or all) parties, we have no way to know that we are discussing the same ideas. I'll come back to this, it's interesting stuff. Have I suggested looking at "Millbrook" by Art Kleps? He was with Leary at the beginning of "psychedelianism" and had some interesting ideas about monism vs. dualism, occultism, one's relationship to the universe, and so on. Cool stuff.
I get ya SchluBelberg. The Universe just is, as far as we are concerned. It is always now and we are always here. All we can do is Be Here Now. But I still think your relegating faith to a place beneath its value. But intellectually I have to agree with you. Peace and interstellar security, -v-
Being a hippy is definately not a religion. There is no dogma when it comes to being a hippy. It is all about thinking outside the square. There are of course Jesus freaks who are hippies and have found god in their lives. What leaves me scatching my head is why so many hippes beleive in Astrology. I mean being a hippy means you can say goodbye to all that mind control clap trap.
