If there were only tribute bands than I would say rock is dead indeed. Happily in my opinion rock keeps evolving also in good ways. And I'm not talking about punk-influenced rock like the Hives (I think the Hives are pretty ok though) or indie and most of the other bands mentioned in this topic. I'm listening to Greenleaf - You got me high right now and there are a whole lot of bands out there still playing pure rock 'n roll and psych rock that's heavily influenced by the sixties and seventies. I really feel sorry for the people at this forum complaining that rock is dead and have no idea what is out there. Indie, emo and pop/rock aren't the only 'rock' that is being made nowadays. Just put some effort in your searching.
Well... Pete Townshend (there he is again) the only person who ccan really put into words what Rock is about was always talking about POP, Pop art, the pop single, how it should remain art. In one interview he said (about quiting); "it's not like, the show must go on, or you'll be dissapointing the fans if you don't go on, you know its; "You got to go on man! otherwise, all these kids...they'll be Finished! They'll have nothing to live for!" and he's right offcourse...again:H
I don't think music is dead or will ever die. There is some music out there today that i don't get. the great music of the past will influence someof the great new bands coming up and they'll take it into unknown directions, some magical, some not so great but the point is that the magical stuff will be there, very much alive
Paul McCartney is dead! Or wait...no...I don't think he is...with all the shouting of things being dead, I got a bit too carried away. Hehe.
The only good music nowadays that's meaningful that I've heard lately would have to be System of a Down.
Classic music like Wagner etc etc is nor dead but not popular . Rock well never be as popular as it was in the 60s and 70s simply becouse that golden era music is over just like classic music once was. and no matter how excellent the music from the 60s and 70s was only kids with good ears might get into it "and many do since you cant resist good music no matter how old it is" others have a narrow brain with narrow taste for music to them i say oh fucking well.
before that around 1974 then the disco crap show up rock never quite return and was only prolong by metal . TV and the media expose the disco so much like a antivirus for rock that it actually did kill it. not completely but it did a huge damage then everybody got fed up with the double dose of disco by the TV Media and movies company and then disco die.
yes i think the same ... but i often say 65-73 ...'cause in 73' was a great year for classic rock albums... but it's real that in 73' some stupid glam bands started to take rock n roll not seriously..some were good but some were bad... but for people who don't know rock n roll very good ...i told them (to make it more simple) that from 65 to 75 rock n roll was good... Even in mid 70's a lot of great albums were recorded...
i would strech 73 but not much more 65 or 66 is not critical but 66 was a bit more serius rock wise. but thats nick picking . glam bands fall on a difrent catagory .
The greatest albums were recorded between 1970 and 1973 im saying 73 becouse only im not sure if P floyd was done in 72 or 73 . YES, Pink, The Who ,and Zep , Allman, Alice C were the big boys in 70 thru 73 . Sabbath was limited by the radio stations "it was too Dark to play it on the radio"
you're mainly right the best album are recorded before '73 and not after... but it's not that simple...for some exemples that you give... the Allman's decline was firstly 'cause the bassist and guitarist were dead ...without those both accidents ...their decline will be different and not as fast. -and Alice Cooper...even if i like better the band ... "Welcome Into My Nightmares" is often considered as his (last good ?) and best album ...and it was recorded in 75... Aerosmith recorded in 75 and 76 two of the most "take it to the limit" rock n roll records... -Toys in the Attic- and -Rocks- are probably in the best of list of 70's rock... Well not everybody like the Eagles -Hotel California- album from late '76 ... it was the last hippie album ...it talks of the end of a time... it's a great work...it's a little megalomania (cocaine pot champaigne and a lot of work)...but it's great ...and forget the song Hotel California ...the album is great even without it...without problem The Who recorded too their last classic album in 1975 ...it was the who by numbers... it's not my case but for a lot of Zep fans their biggest work is Physical Graffiti (75)... personally i think that it's a too overload LP ... i like better their rock folk albums. but well rock n roll was in decline since 1974 ...it's just from my point a vue a slow decline ... i have to say that ...it's not because the hippie and psychedelic movement was in decline from 73/74 that rock n roll was in decline too... the hippie movement and rock n roll are not really similar... they were as brothers in arms... if one is goin' wrong the other is influenced & affected but the second has is own mind and feelings...(to survive to the desillusion of a movement)
mainstream music has always sucked. Alot of the chart toppers in the 60s and 70s were real lame. Alot of the famous ppl that u mentioned were not necesarilly comercial successes. Great music hasnt died its just not right in front of you.
