I think that person may have been delusional when they told you that, because Portuguese and French are nothing alike. Whilst some words and phrases may be similar, the verbs and pronunciations are different from one another. You could say that Portuguese and Brazilian are perhaps more closely related to each other, given that Brazilian is a Portuguese dialect - with Spanish close behind, quite a few words and phrases are similar. As someone who can speak both Portuguese and French - I can safely say that they aren't alike.
Je suis italian et je pense qu'est plus facile ecrire en français, mais est plus facile parler en espanol. Je ne sais pas parler en francais [est trop different la phonétique et la pronunciation], mais je comprends espanol (que je n'ai étudié). I don't think, but some words are similar 'cause french, spanish, italian, portuguese et romanian are romance languages. The word night is: Notte (IT) Nuit (FR) Noche (SP) Noite (PO) Noapte (RU) Signing is: Cantare (IT) Chanter (FR) Cantar (SP) Cantar (PO) Canta (RO)
L'allemand et l'anglais ont de nombreux mots très proches, pour autant Allemands et Anglais ne se comprennent pas. Et comment un français pourrait-il comprendre l'espagnol ou l'italien alors qu'il lui est déjà extrêmement difficile de comprendre le français parlé au Québec ?!
