English is spoken in Poland. If you go to a large city you will not have a problem. Outer towns and villages are a little bit harder. If you run into younger generation people then they can speak English, but I remember going to a fruit market run by two older people and it just wasn't working. They seem more offended when I tried the approach in German. I remember all we were asking is if they took the Euro. Once we showed them the bill, we got a solid shake of the head. In Krakow, Warsaw etc. everybody spoke English when they needed to.
English and Chinese work for most of the world. But it doesn't usually work in Asian countries like Thailand or Japan without a local tour guide
