How can a place that's 48% black/mulatto be racist? I have a black friend who spent eight months in Rio and swears up and down that there's no racism in Brazil.
same way anyplace can be i guess. not sure what the racial makeup of any given country has to do with whether or not there's racism there. well, that's 8 months more than i've spent there, so he probably has a better idea than i do.
I was reading something the other day that mentioned Brazil has a different perspective on race and that it is viewed more as a spectrum Which it should be and makes a lot of sense. I dunno though, I have never been. It is on my bucket list though. Have you been?
No I haven't been there yet. I was hoping to do study abroad there, but it didn't work out, even though I had a teacher rec from a poli sci professor.
I think you need to do more reading. That is a fairy tale. Racism exists in Brazil just like in every other country. What should be and what is the reality are often two very different things.
hi, firstly your friend spending only 8months in Brazil is not a good barometer . He/she is a westerner I guess, that gives a massive automatic advantage and leaves that person above a white middle class Brazilian in the eyes of the average Brazilian , sad but true. The next thing is the figure you quoted about skin colour. What westerners call black and what is considered black here are very different things..I won't go into this its too hard to explain briefly but as an example I know a few Brazilians whose Nick name is (translated into English) big Negro one of these guys is like a white westerners with a good tan . What I would say as a foreigner who has lived in Brazil for 12 years is that is a racist country, however as racism isn't tolerated by the law people are weary very afraid of being openly racist which makes it less visible especially to one who isn't Brazilian or hasn't spent much time here.
Since the Olympics are over, I dont think anyone cares There isnt really any reason most of those south american countries cant pull themselves out of the mess they are in, I'm talking economically, not racially
LOL so you only think "white" people can be racist??? LOL the naivete in this one is stupendous......LOL
Too right! what with their infrastructure which is second to none, the highly educated workfoce and the absence of massive coruption. Infact other countries in predominantly 3rd world continents like Africa should do the same "pull themselves out of the mess they are in"
