Schizophrenics have a problem. Teenagers who get depressed don't. There is not chemical imbalance that's unnatural. Depression, mood swings, anxiety, and such other things aren't disorders, they are merely a part of life. True personal growth comes out of surpassing these unfortunate parts of life without medication. I hate all the pills that people are given. They do not deal with the problem, they merely help alleviate the symptoms. Why do you think that there's no cure for any of these "mental disorders"? There are only remedies. I think that it's simply because they are fabrications. I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder when I was a tad younger. Sure, I was depressed a lot at times, and unusually cheery at others. It's just a part of life. I even tried medication for a while, and all it really did was make somewhat of a zombie out of me. I finally got over my depression when I stopped the damn medication, took control of my life, changed my outlook, started occupying myself, and doing lots of physical exercise. I am no longer depressed, even though the psychologist described me as an "extreme bi-polar case". I no longer suffer from mood swings. I actually lead a rather content existence. Sure, I get depressed once in a while, but that's only natural. Everyone gets depressed, there's nothing wrong with it of and the right thing to do is find the cause of the depression while trying to solve it instead of simply pushing it back with drugs. People these days are pussies who lack personal responsibility and self-discipline. Taking medication is just a cheap excuse, and people claim that "it helps" because they have never tried to get to the root of their problems and beat it through simply living life and conquering obstacles. In a sense, as Syd there said... we all do have mental disorders. Which can just as easily be stated as "none of us have mental disorders". People still survived back in the day before all of these drugs were available, and were probably happier. Suicide rates were lower. Children behaved better, and there weren't a bunch of drugged out teenagers walking around. Hell, you're older. You should know better.
I'm far from an expert about these things-I think lots of people are diagnosed with bipolar disorders who have other problems. I think it is a name for other mental problems that doctors use because they don't understand what is happening. But I have had some friends who had real problems when they were off their meds. Some of them weren't great when they were on their meds-but they were a lot worse than when they were on them. And some of them shouldn't have been on them at all. And yes there weren't all of these drugged out teenagers walking around-we had mental hospitals and probably more suicides. And BraveSirRubin I have read many of your threads and I do have respect.
I think BSR makes a good point: Medication is often over-prescribed. That says nothing about the legitimacy of the disorders in the first place, only that pharmaceuticals are not a panacea.
haha, "severe ADD" .. back in the day, all of that energy would have come in handy. building, farming, hunting for dinner, having sex, etc etc but ya know.. nowadays, if you're a little on the high strung side, it must be ADD.. not the lack of physical activity in our day to day lives slowly driving people nuts..
Lol well i live on 3 acres by a River and spend my summer days mowing, weeding, and planting/gardening in those 3 acres. Although i also hang out with friends. My main problems with A.D.D are: my Innability to concentrate, lack of self motivation, reclusiveness(sometimes), and its extremely difficult for me to communicate with people in person.
who says the personality 'god gave him' is any better than the one prescribed stimulants give him? there must be something to add, biologically, for the afflicted to take as much uppers as they do and not be tweaking face 24/7.
I really think at least 1/2 of ADD cases instead of giving the kids amphetamines could be solved with smacking them in the back of the head and saying sit the fuck down and study. Instead all those amphetamines should be directed towards me.
have you ever taken stimulants habitually? your body builds a tolerence rather quickly in my experience.. so you may feel a certain high initially, but you're not going to feel that way if you're taking them every day for months or years.. by the way I don't know why I said 'god made him' .. I'm not even religious lol
Tolerance doesn't explain the way most people with ADHD react to stimulants. The paradoxical calming effect they have has yet to be explained. My whole point about the god thing was, who is to say that the personality your born with is any better than a manufactured one (for lack of a better term)? Nobody, it's just residual sentimentalism. The distinction is entirely arbitrary. Just like the distinction between 'mentally ill' and healthy, if you look at it from an extremely detached perspective. It all comes down to differences; the value judgments that we place on them are subjective and a reflection of our cultural values and individual perceptions. Some people have a harder time coping in our society than others, and it is often (but far from always) beneficial to the society and the individual in question to take steps that makes interaction and integration easier.
1. even if you don't call it bi-polar, i have a condition which causes me have bouts of depression, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, and toehr such thing 2. i take a mood stablilizer and it helps balance the chemicals which cause this, alleviating the discomfort somewhat. 3. don't tell me what i should do about my own mental well-being. it seems to me most people who disregard mental health and therapy and the like as a lot of psycho-babble could benefit from some therapy themselves.
i don't think it's especially important what you call it. if you are depressive, and you trake something that makes you feel better, that's it. as for adhd, i've also been diagnosed witht hat and given perscriptions for it. i don't notice a calming effect, but the stimulant helps me concentrate, it's not especially important to me what the diagnosis is. i just want to be able to work, which i can't do effectively if i'm always depressed and unfocused.
I agree and disagree with you here. I believe that all of these "syndromes" could be diagnosed in all of us. A more accurate term to replace syndrome should be tendencies. And they shouldn't be treated as illnesses - I think a lot of these things are phases or a result of something else in life that needs to be balanced or thought upon to come to a conclusion and a "cure". The idea that these syndromes are illnesses come from people who have an overload of a certain tendency - doctor's, seeking a buck, prescribe costy medication instead of trying to actually help people out. Depression runs deep in my family, and I am quite certain I could go to the doctor and be prescribed Zoloft or any of that shit, but I don't think that it would actually help. Instead of taking medications, we should be seeking why so many of us feel like shit or have a life altering mind state. It has. Most mental "syndromes" are chemical imbalances. What we don't need is more crap flooded into the brain. Our brain can make the same chemicals that ADHD meds attempt to replace. What needs to happen is to seek the cause of the imbalance...prescriptions aren't treating the CAUSE, it treats the symptoms.
This is what I've been saying for years, for most people, well everyone in general really, none of this shit fixes the problem, it's like putting a bandaid on a cut that won't stop bleeding and saying "well, we can't get your cut to actually heal, but here's bandaids for the rest of life"
:cheers2: It's cause people are stupid and rush to think that something is wrong with them. We are all fundamentally flawed, and that's perfectly fine. It's how it should be. However, there are some cases that are pretty intense, but for the most part, I feel ADHD/ADD is a giant misunderstanding brought on primarily by suburban soccer moms that watch way too much Oprah/Dr Phil
Bingo, soccer moms strung out on valium and xanax can't deal with the normal energy of 14 year old. As for Dr. phil, I could start a 40 minute rant on him
It isn't just Dr. Phil, Oprah is just as bad and it pisses me off that people don't realize she is in the same boat as FOX News and media in general. Hell, she is the embodiment of what media is.
