i'm guessing that this thread is a passive-aggressive dig at some of the members here in response to some forum politics that i haven't been aware of? fair enough.

I found out today that there is no such thing as fish. blew my mind, man. Also, all squid are the same species.

    sea facts.

as i understand it, there are things we call fish, but that's a term that has no biological meaning. Therefore while the things we call fish do exist, there aren't really such things as "fish" the term is kind of meaningless. that's why we can lump starfish, jellyfish and crayfish together, its more of a colloquial term for things that live underwater, but unlike "insect", it has no set of biological rules to determine it. most things that come under the header "fish" have absolutely nothing to do with each other from a biological/evolutionary point of view, unlike mammals, for instance, which all share a common ancestor, you basically get the label "fish". It would be like if we called wasps, bees, birds and flying lizards "air-dwellers". in the 16th century hippos and crocodiles were called "fish" as well.

In our language there are no starFISH or jellyFISH, we call starfish seastars for instance. On the other hand we do call whales walvis (whalefish) while it is a mammal.
