Yeah, there really isn't a better comparison for the Republican Guard. It's an army inside an army, out of the normal chain of command, severely politically indoctrinated, much more well equipped and trained than the general forces, holds loyalty to certain people over the state or people, and has vast economic interests, basically its own little mini economy. The SS is the only thing that comes close to the sheer amount of power and influence in many of the same ways that the Republican Guard does.

 

Karroubi told the New York Times three days ago that Monday's events would be decisive both for the regime and the Green Movement. In other words, he and Mousavi took a big gamble. Had the march fizzled out, it could have been a crushing setback. The pair's track record over the last two years shows that they are not reckless risk-takers. We can assume that their decision was part good information or good guesswork about the regime's intentions and part good strategizing. Right now, the two are incommunicado. But we'll find out soon what further action they might call for.

I think you mean Revolutionary Guard not Republican Guard. The Republican guard was from Iraq.

The guy in the dirty t-shirt on the right side of the screen was trolling the protesters the whole time the were marching. He kept telling them that Ahmadinejad won fair and square and they were all puppets of the CIA.
