I have a friend whose daughter was born recently with lissencepathy. She has no reflexes or muscle tone so it has a role in normal brain function not to mention higher function.

First off, they don't make any kind of STATISTICAL correlation. They take a small study of 33 individuals and don't analyze the data, rather "They repeated the tests four years later and found that SOME TEENS improved their scores by as much as 20 points on the standardized IQ scale. tests four years later and found that some teens improved their scores by as much as 20 points on the standardized IQ scale."

Perhaps some dropped by 20 points and averaged out the data. This is no way to scientifically interpret data. Scientific literacy is not a common thing sadly.

The more relevant point however is that it takes some time for genes to "express themselves". "A 1996 statement by the American Psychological Association gave about .45 for children and about .75 during and after adolescence." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritability_of_IQ

If you take a black child adopted by white parents with high IQs who read to the child and encourage academic development, you will absolutely see a rise in IQ. Until the genes fully express themselves and the fully formed Asian person, fully formed White person, fully formed Black person displays the traits that have been naturally selected for over thousands and thousands of generations.

Why would we expect every group of people to be equally good at using their minds? The NBA is 80% black. Jeremy Lin can play but I don't see anyone arguing for Affirmative Action in basketball. Surely if it existed, Asians would get much better at basketball!

The 100m dash is ALWAYS won by dark skinned people. They have a much higher proportion of fast twitch muscle fibers. Certain Kenyan tribes dominate long distance running. People are specialized and adept at different tasks, why do we insist on maintaining these egalitarian delusions?

That study was a small example of a fairly well documented phenomenon (by the way it did mention that some children showed large decreases in IQ).

Here is a larger study (n=717) that explores the possibility that environmental factors are responsible for IQ change.

    http://aje.oxfordjournals.org/content/154/8/711.full

That study cites several others. This is a fairly well established phenomenon.

    and there we have it.
The troll has revealed himself with the racist comments I knew were on the horizon.

I suggest nobody waste their time with this one.

I very much so appreciate you bringing these studies into the conversation, but immediately upon viewing the data I notice they test at two ages, 6 years old and 11 years old. This is before puberty and before the genes will come anywhere close to expressing themselves.

So we're chucking science out the window? This is not a troll. It is totally impossible to have honest conversations if people like you are willing to abandon the conversation. I'm speaking 100% sincerely, logically, and reasonably.

Are you really incapable of having a reasonable conversation or will you abandon all critical thinking for emotional upheaval?

I'm not sure that you're correct about that. The average age of puberty onset was 10.5 in 2010. That's average, meaning many were below that age. That age is even younger for African American girls.

This is supposed to discount neuroplasticity?

You're absolutely right. Black people are born a week early, walk earlier, develop physical skills earlier. Genes will still manifest themselves more and more until an adult is fully mature. 11 is no where close.

    no you are not.
you are throwing out tired and useless racially motivated bullshit in the guise of scientific studies.

just the fact that you think I'm "chucking out science" because I have no real desire to engage in stupidity with a troll who hasn't done a very good job at veiling his racism lends even more strength to my assessment that you are in fact, trolling the forum.

It appears from your reactions to others that it is you that is incapable of having a reasonable conversation, and I promise you, I probably have more experience in the area of science and scientific study than you have thus far demonstrated and I'm probably one of the most critically thinking SOB's here.
So, did you actually read the study the map was from?
It really is kinda shitty science after all and not as solid as you or the authors would want us to think.
Trust me, I have a knack for finding the holes in research and what you are hanging your hat on aint that great.

No, it's essentially accounting for neuroplasticity which decreases over time. That's why it's easier to learn languages at younger ages. Genes are less deterministic the younger you are. Asians develop slowest, White people at an intermediate rate and Black people the fastest. Over time gaps in brain power will grow until they are maximally apparent in adult populations. When these children are very young the gaps will be much narrower and subject to environmental variation / happenstance.

The state of epigenetics can take control of development that overrides genetic code. Behavior and environment can affect how those genes are expressed or how the information in a gene gets translated into proteins. Epigenetics means around the gene or as example the soup in which we bathe our genes that is determined by human choice, We are the cooks of our soup that influences if our genes are healthy or diseased. For example, if your brother or your dad had prostate cancer, there is likely an area in your genetic code that puts you at high risk for prostate cancer. Research suggests even if your family has a history of cancer, there are things you can do to bathe that gene in a way to keep it from expressing itself. This means your genes may produce healthy prostate tissue instead of tissue that is diseased or cancerous.
