After a very long dry spell I've become sexually active again. So, I wasn't shaving or trimming down below. But, my partner has a preference for bald so I've started shaving. You could try an epilator. It is a small hand held device that plucks the hairs out, rather than shaving them off, so there are no ingrown hairs. Somewhat painful at first, but evidently becomes easier with use.
You can still shave your genital area and avoid those ingrowns and itch. Right after shaving apply lotion infused with aloe and shea butter. Shave often as in every other day and always apply lotion right after drying the area. The lotion softens the skin and seems to lubricate the hair follicle that remains in the pore. I have been shaving for years and had ingrowns and infection in the beginning. When I started applying the aloe and shea butter infused lotion it all cleared up.
