I just received a phone call from a blocked number. It was a guy claiming to be from the cable company saying some bullshit about hackers, how they have my mac address and are trying to attack me (haha, im not naive ok;). I could have just hung up the phone right there, but I decided to talk to this guy and see where this was going .. im not afraid of hackers, and i know what imformation not to give out. He couldn't recite my mac address, which tells me he doesn't even know. But i know what my mac address is (for the modem), i have all that information. He wanted me to do something on the computer, get infomation i guess. I told him that wouldn't work because I wasn't in Windows ;). He asked me what operating system I was using and I told him. Slackware Linux 14.1, running KDE and he hung up right there. I'm not intimidated by these people. I know a little about computers myself so it's gonna be pointless to talk to me but I'll be happy to waste some of your time talking to me while you figure that out ;) Fuck outta here!

I do believe these people are trying to obtain MAC addresses for registered cable modems so that they can spoof that MAC on a modem with hacked firmware. If the modem is on a different node than the one they are connecting to then the network will accept the modem and they can connect to the TWC network for free, using that person's account! Do not give these people any information at all!

yeah, i guess he figured out i was taking him on a spin to waste his time ;) i kinda wish that went on a bit longer, i'm curious exactly what he was after, i'm assuming he was gonna get people to run some shell commands in Windowz and when it dumps a million lines of text to the screen he'd say that that means my computer is fucked up/hacked/got viruses and then try to get you to install something to fix it which would be some kind of backdoor into ur system .. TECH SUPPORT DOESNT CALL YOU, YOU HAVE TO CALL THEM (and be transferred to several extensions over several hours ;)) .. he told me to press Win + R which brings up a command line in windows but i told him that key combo doesn't work on my OS

i can run the dmesg command and see tons of lines that say stuff like FAILED, i just ran dmesg | grep -i fail .. this is in linux btw, in windows theres different commands
^that doesn't indicate a problem, just that at some point the system tried using a certain driver and it returned with an error so it switches it off/uses different one. i mean this guy didn't even have the class to spoof his telephone number .. me personally, if I were gonna run a scam like that, i'd spoof my number to show up as the number for Micro$oft themselves or something on CID, its not *that* difficult .. instead he just blocked caller id so it showed up as private :\ only thing that sounded legit was the chinese accent .. that seemed pretty legit to me ;-)

sometimes when people call me wanting information, i'll stay on the phone with them but give them tons of fake (sometimes really obviously fake) information until they hang up

i like a screen full of text sometimes, i think i prefer green text on black it hurts ur eyes less ;)
