Ok, first of all, I always wanted to use this smilie from the new list, and I finally have the opportunity: :withstupi

Firstly, I do hope you're kidding with the post you wrote about time travel, because that's fucking hilarious. Secondly, you're taking a fragment of what I wrote and blowing it out of proportion again, which is just retarded, but if you're really 16 then it's kind of expected, because clearly you can't seem to argue anything validly. Thirdly, if you have friends - jewish or not - who've gone off on jews, what part of that makes it ok? :ack: Maybe the circle you hang out with become pissy and racist when drunk, but people I know don't. To say that 'many folks go off on the jews when they're drunk' is kind of a backwards argument, and it doesn't make it ok.

Agreed. Being drunk isn't an excuse for Gibson, and having a bad day isn't an excuse for Richards.

God forbid Richards and Gibson should ever run into the Lemba Tribe ( Black Jews who claim direct descent from king Solomon) :leaving:

BTW: The Lemba tribe under went DNA testing and the geneticists concluded they are one of the lost tribes of Israel.

What I don't understand is why when Richards said this and when Gibson's anti-sementic rant happened, all these ethnic "leaders" (like Sinbad... when was he elected representitive of the black race?) got up and demanded an aplology, and then all of them said it wasn't good enough. Simply acknowledging you were wrong and saying "I'm sorry" should be aplology a-plenty. What did they want, a pound of flesh? It seems to me the only people they truly owed apologies to were the people who actually were there and heard the remarks. In person, not by grace of some elicit taper or in-car audio. Everyone else should mind thier own business.

FlyingBurritoBro, I absolutely agree with you.

We all have said the wrong thing on occasion, to varying degrees. If, at the very least, an apology ain't good enough for a wrong doing, than the society we live in sucks.

empared judgement isn't a defense unless someone ties you down and shoots you up with neurotropic substances.

of more concern then any givin incedent are the motivations and values that create a space in which for it to occur.

instead of getting all hot up about what happens one particular time, we really do need to concern ourselves instead with the dynamics of how and why such incidences occur.

but look, the whole entertainment industry IS fluff. fluff to line the pockets of its executives. and if controversy will contribute to doing so then of course the'll go for it, and give a rats ass as to the consiquences to society, as long as they can remain insulated from them themselves, or immagine that they can.

and that, i don't believe, has diddly to do, with what anyone does or does not happen to believe in, nor claim that they do.

but it does have everything to do with what in actual day to day practice is important to them.

right back to may favorite horse; the connection between priorities and probabilities.

Its taken out of context. Supposedly the crowd was really heckling him. You can only push someone so far before they snap.

I would assume, particularly from the way he seemed genuinely surprised at how offended the audience were, that it was a stupid and offensive joke that went a little too far - not racist abuse meant in earnest. Nothing should be beyond humour, particularly these piddling little words. Did we learn nothing from Lenny Bruce?

But from reading this thread you get a sense of just how screwed up America still is about this issue ... it's hard for the rest of the civilised world to understand quite how deep this runs in US culture. You guys can't even joke about it yet...

Dont think its about the use of a specific word, I have a problem with the the viciousnes of the attack
You don't demean people like that.

When I visit with my buddy we go down to the basement to party
with the young kids and smoke blunts.
we listen to music that is hard for me to understand but I hear Niggah on those thug tunes constantly.
    some other crazy shit too.
Seems young people have a more relaxed attitude about
the word niggah and use it as a term of friendship.

It's not really about that ... hecklers demean the performer, it's fair game for him to insult them back, it's part of the act.

Those who are ahead of the curve walk a tightrope when those who aren't have trouble catching up... I think that's what happened in this case. A case of twisted irony backfiring because it wasn't understood as such.

seriously, i saw this comedian one time who starting making fun of black people in his routine. not all that popular, even in farmington, new mexico, where there were probably about 20 black people in the whole huge area. but he was very specific about how he was sick of white people being mocked by everyone and white people not being socially accepted for doing so as well. it's hard to explain why it does make a difference, i'm sure someone is doing a very long and intensive study on why it's different for their doctoral thesis. all i can say is it just plain does matter.
