The Thompson was actually very effective for street clearing (.45 pistol bullets) and some armorers think it should make a comeback. You actually could put 50 rounds in the mag (though that made it heavy)

 

the Thompson submachine gun was/is actually very accurate (for a .45ACP) and was the weapon of choice by law enforcement and the military long before it became notorious in the hands of "gangsters".
The stock straight magazine held 20 rounds, the drum magazine held 50 or 100 rounds.
it was/is one of the most popular weapons of the past century and served in every military conflict since since WWII with great success and has seen many revisions and modifications.
