I see your point. For me, I do not condone my actions as far as pushing my beliefs. It usually leaves me feeling regretful. The reason I push forth though is because I feel it's my duty to expose them to another side. For example, I would not be an atheist myself if I had not been exposed to atheism beliefs. Or scientific theories. Nor would the person I am arguing with be a christian if they were not exposed to Christianity in the first place. Debates are good for everyone. It typically creates situations where people get so hyped up about the argument that they have to analyze the other party's front in order to form a defense. And it exposes them to new ideas, and different thoughts. Same goes for me. I try to keep an open mind. It gets very tough at times, but I still try. I wish everyone would try. Usually this is not the case. By my rationalizing for this is that I may say something, that get someone's mind going in just a slightly different direction. This may not lead to them becoming atheist, but it may move them to something else. It may make them a stronger christian or whatever. Or it may effect a completely different aspect of their life. No matter, what, there is a chance that I expose them to some new information. Teach them something new. And possibly help them open their minds a bit. Regardless of the topic, it can only help.
I am a tecnocrat. military historian and analyst and rationalist. I believe in god I do not believe in religion. Athiests talk a lot about god. Maybe they should consider// which one? Or none proposed by man. What made the rules.? The designer made this universe using the tool 'evolution' All problems solved
No, you only just began to describe the problems... Who designed the designer? and what tools did THEY use? and who designed them? Atheists MUST talk about god, as must you and anyone else who has a viewpoint on religion they think worthy of more attention.
The designer was designed by that above him. Have you no idea what an infinite stack of turtles is? You spout god and religion yet none of them mean anything to you. god or no god does not change your reality, which is lies more lies and consumerism... your self empowerment through idiotic beliefs has no end
I think it's a matter of definitions. Some say atheism is the rejection of gods -- others say it is the disbelief in gods. The latter doesn't require former knowledge, and by that definition -- everyone is born atheist. On the other hand, I feel that agnosticism requires former knowledge because it's the belief that we can't possibly know -- which I think takes a bit of information for one to be able to determine.
I'm anti-theist -well, it's mainly the holy books I'm against why? -condoms in Africa -abstinence only education -gay marriage -9/11 -inbreeding in Amish community -Stem cell research -abortion Religion retards progress
The word universe describes "everything that exists anywhere". Its not fair to talk about god (or anything else) and the universe as if they are different things. Also: The infinite regression (turtles all the way down) dies with determinism; There is no BEFORE "us", because we are included in the word universe also.
The ones who force their belief upon others isn't that big of a deal to me. People force all kinds of beliefs upon others usually out of a love for debate & discussion, need for clarity, need for truth, etc. Religious beliefs demand the same intellectual curiosity and thus confrontations happen.
I thought there was no god but god.... So you're a poly-theist? or.... huh?.... My beliefs, or rather lack thereof, don't empower me, they're rather humbling. Why do you think nonbelief is so discouraged in the military? Imaginary friends help you through tough times.... And I liked reading about yurtle the turtle too.... but there's a difference between dr. seuss and the nature of the universe, even if it's not much of a difference:2thumbsup: *edit* DAYUM, jmt has a stick up his ass. Every time he can't (or just doesn't feel like ) counter something, he just hands out neg rep, which either has a message that would put you in protective custody in most jurisdictions, or some textual representation of what his laugh apparently sounds like.
Polytheist? what is that? I stated that you exist in a system of consumerism. One is the consumerism of god. Occam
this looks like an interesting thread, I just want to point out some common misconceptions and critisisms about atheism 1. Atheism is the dogmatic belief there is no god. many atheists believe there is no case or sufficient evidence for a god- and are open to the idea if sufficient evidence were found. 2. Why spread it? why not let people beleive the happy lie? "aren't you hippocrites?" most atheists are rationalists and point out the circular reasoning and flaws that exist in many religeons. if you heard children being taught 2+2=5 wouldn't you want to correct them? 3. atheists have no moral code Fuck you, if you beleive that. I beleive if anyone has no moral code it is christians, muslims etc. because they have to refer to a perveted storybook than to use their own moral compass. idk. not feeling to good as I type. will post more in this thread- please critisize and tear my post apart as you wish. and please ask any questions you want.
who cares.. just tune out the rants. believe what you want to believe not every atheist is out to crusade and convince everyone that their way is the only way. just like not every believer is out to force their dogma and convert you.
I agree that those atheists are being hypocritical, just like many of the religions that they are against. That isn't the kind of atheist I am.
Statistically, areas with more Atheism have a higher IQ on average and higher average education. Fact. And I don't think it's a coincidence. Actually, I have also read studies that show Atheists have stronger moral values. That makes sense to me, considering they don't need to be scared into behaving a certain way, it makes sense that those who only have certain values because the bible told them to would be much weaker in mind and values. Obviously doing something because the bible told you to is not a good reason to do something.
