I think there are problems using politicians' speeches to figure out what they believe, because they lie like hell. Was Sadam Hussein a devout Muslim? He purported to be one, but I doubt it. Ideologically, the Nazi movement, especially as espoused by figures like Himmler, was heavily influenced by Teutonic pagan mysticism. The Nazis probably saw no conflict between that and Christianity, of course with an Aryan Jesus. Is the KKK a Christian organization. Its leaders and members would say yes. Most Christians would say it's the opposite of Christian.

 

I think we can disregard the REAL beliefs of people like Hitler and the KKK representatives because of the simple fact that they have followings.

They lied, yes, and people bought it. People bought into false and twisted data which is easily disputable at best. They murdered and oppressed millions, and why?

Because they like how the ideas made them feel.

Because through those feelings, they are able to disregard logic and falsifiable science.

I agree atheist preaching or crusading is as bad as any other form from any other religion.

However, I think that there is use in letting people know the science that's out there that may help them make a lfe-saving decision (i.e. Jehovah's witnesses and blood transfusions). Alas, I'm falling into that category and preaching as though science is the truth...

 

Hitler, Mussolini and possibly the Ils of North Korea are/were all athesits but it wasn't necessarily WHY they commited the acts they did. Even IF it was why, does that mean atheism is bad? Any ideology/religious viewpoint is open to interpretation and can be manipulated into hatred and evil (however one defines acts of evil). Even within your metatheory you can be pre-disposed to a thinking which condemns others in society.

Atheism VS religion is a false dichotomy, because there are atheist religions. It makes it painfully clear that people who attempt to generalize about atheists don't understand what it means.....its as if they are quarrelling with logical discourse.

I go out on a limb to be the best heretic I can be sometimes, but to be honest, I am weary of the calculating left brained state of mind I abuse around here. I go to class, the movies, dinner, and everywhere else with "Christians" and "Muslims" and they don't judge me.
