I'd give 'em such a bag of shit they would either give up the idea or have to do it on the sly.... Yea, I have always encouraged my kids to be independent thinkers, but some things I draw the line at, and being a professional killer is one of them.

i meant different, as in different from enlisting for boot camp - nature of the work is completely different. of course its still in support of the US gov't thats kind of obvious isnt it

some of you really aggravate me. if people werent still willingly enlisting, there would be a draft and a lot of people would be fucked. The reason we hae been relatively safe since 9/11 has a lot to do with our military. It really makes me feel ashamed to hear so many americans say basically fuck the military and the gov't. guess what, in the current political climate, they are completely necessary and serve to keep all of our asses protected

I don't other than what people have told me. I was mostly commenting on whether or not you can gain insight about the world with or without being in the military. Traveling abroad for self discovery can be just as effective as being in the military, I imagine.

Just do what Rick Steve's suggests, and you'll most likely have all of the insight you need.

And if you want to help out, there is always many charity organizations and the peace corps you can look into joining.

If any of my future children were interested in joining the military for any reason.

    It means I have failed.

The military is what sources and sustains world conflicts - peace can never be obtained as long as there is war.

I'm more concerned about police oppression than someone on the other side of the world. Because of the anyone can be a "terrorist" mentality, we give up our rights to feel "safe" from those who are our neighbors - and due to the widespread media induced paranoia may be even more afraid of us!!!!

"Western society" is a prison camp... a prison camp full of slaves that are relatively well taken care of - solely because they collectively serve those in the high controlling class. Other parts of the world are now feeling the hurt of "western society" over consumption, pollution, various genocides, continuous wars... to an extent where some decide to finally fight back. Of course a small pebble cannot destroy a large rock... by piercing into the rock it may only become part of the rock! Such is the case when western society is forcibly challenged - the hate and greed overcomes and instead of beating the machine, they are beaten INTO the machine.

Money (debt) is the oil that keeps the gears (slaves, western society) turning...

We elect to turn the machine, or not...

Joining the military is only fueling the machine that enslaves the world....

Freedom is not the ability to do what someone tells you to do... it is the ability to do what you tell you to do. As such, freedom may be grasp at any moment by anybody for it is nothing more than a train of thought.

There is no provable correlation between what the military has been doing since 9/11 and our safety.

That’s like saying Bush’s War on Terror has kept another 9/11 from happening, whereas the truth may simply be that Bush reacted exactly the way the terrorists wanted him to and they didn’t feel the need to motivate him any further. Or maybe they just needed more time to plan another attack or a hundred other reasons another 9/11 hasn’t happened besides Bush’s War on Terror.

Reminds me of the old joke about the guy who lives in Florida and shoots a canon off every day at 3 o’clock in the morning.

Finally his neighbor asked him; why do you do it?

He said; it’s to keep the Polar Bears away.

His neighbor said; there are no Polar Bears in Florida!

The man said; see it works! ;)

sorry I don't support a government that travels to lands around the world to kill the people that reside there. It is just not the American government, it is all of the governments in the world..none of them have a clue about how to make peace.I pay my taxes, I abide the laws.that is me, you are you..do what you want..

Oh, I agree you can have insight about the world with out traveling it.
But, a specific insight in certain things needs experience in it.
The military being one of them, imo.
I think a spell in the military doesn't make you any wiser, but it does give a person a unique insight into the world and themselves (if they chose to look for it.)

Yeah, but that is not killing the enemy or risking life and limb, is it?

My friend just graduated from boot camp in the Coast Guard. I wasn't exactly thrilled with his choice of joining, but I didn't argue with him or try to change his mind. In the end, it is a personal decision, and you can't very well tell someone you don't support them in chasing their dreams. Well, if you're an asshole, I guess you can, but it's not like your opinion's gonna change their mind.
