The USA has always had a peaceful transference of power. It goes back to George Washington resigning his commission after the American Revolution. A truly touching story. I suggest you look it up and read it, even if you are not American. Anyways, like many of you, I was frightened by the prospect of President Trump upsetting this precedent. So I started praying to our former presidents. I'm serious. Then I also remembered when I pray for political things, I almost rarely get it. (Paradoxically when I pray for anything else, I almost always get it. Don't ask me to explain it.) So I rescinded my prayers. And Mr. Biden won. Again I can't explain it. Another appropriate prayer?/song? is from 'My Country 'Tis of Thee': Our fathers' God, to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing; Long may our land be bright, With freedom's holy light, Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King. I do have to tell you all, I have been a liberal to varying degrees all my life. And yes it's true, liberals believe in God and pray too. Comments?
Well, you are welcome to pray all you can. I pray every day. The world needs this. People need prayers also. God is telling you there is a separation of the STATE and RELIGION for a very good reason. Politics is a godless pursuit of narcissism.
i would suggest, gods, beliefs, prayers, are all fine. the unknown prevents nothing. but if you love a country or a planet or a species, my humble suggestion is to love, embrace, study and learn, logic, consideration and science. more harm, in this world anyway, is caused by ignorance, then by any amount of disbelief.
I felt compelled to add this (long since one of my favorite quotes): 'I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.' Thomas Jefferson (private letter, 1800)
EDIT: And I think it's time for Mr. Jefferson to make good on that promise. What do the rest of you think?
That's a fantastic prayer with a very spirited sentiment! I think there's something personally enriching about prayer. It's a good prayer. Thank you.
i neither love nor hate any country, but i believe in the goodness of strangeness and not in the goodness of wishing to be feared. the dominance of aggressiveness IS tyranny, and the deconstruction of consent of the governed is not a defense of freedom either. i'm thankful that many in government, in professional non-elected positions, who have weathered the storm, understand and realize that. and that we have an elected administration, that realizes that, having replaced four tyrannical years, of one that did not. i also hope though, that people realize that one nation does not benefit the world by leading it in all things, and that not all nations benefit, by following the example of the same one, other then themselves, nation, no matter how powerful, nor seductive to the uncritical eye. there are too many bad examples america has set, and at times even demanded be followed. consent of the governed is a good example, and there are others, but a transportation policy, that has made a golden calf of the automobile, is or was, an example of one of the bad ones. the culture of; if it creates a job or makes someone rich it has to be good, is another. yes there are many things i do love about the country i live, and many other things i do not, and i do not expect that would be greatly different, just about different things, were i to live in another.
