Hotwater, You can trap me at Mission Beach anytime you like, I promise not to run away! Unfortunately it was the bulls eye for Cyclone 'Yasi' in Feb 2011 and was a MESS.
usedtobehoney, Key West is the only safe place to live in the US, all the rest is under 15' of SNOW! Also the gay capitol of the Universe! Worth the drive though.
WOW! The damage was impressive http://motorboatsmonthly.media.ipcdigital.co.uk/9091/0000034b0/9e25/Cyclone-Yasi2.jpg Hotwater
This is where I live (I'm sitting in a house at the base of the little pointy mountain in the upper right of this photo). The island on the horizon is Skye. My profile pic shows another view of the same place
this is more my speed then any of those tropical places. (i do know where the isle of sky is, even though i've never been there) if all the people who want tropical climates would go to them, that would leave more room for me where i'd rather be.
Hotwater, The pic in #41 shows Dunk Island in the background. It had a 5 Star resort on it that was reduced to rubble. Still is! Dunk island a National Park so anyone can go over and have a look.
Outside Hawaii and Australia, anything that could be described as a tropical paradise is in some povo overpopulated third world country
Ideally I would love to immigrate to another country, any help in getting a passport to EU, iceland, UK would be appreciated, though all my heritage is probably too distant. Realistically with America or South Africa, I like being on the west in america. Denver's my home, but I'm thinking of moving to the west coast. I loved my time in So Cal, I've been obsessed with the Pacific Northwest region recently, and North California being the only place I haven't seen, I wish to see it before I make a final decision as to where I'll live next Definitely a west coast soul though Travel wise, I really wish to explore Alaska and Hawaii next for the States, Internationally see Iceland, netherlands, denmark, england, /northern areas of europe
if you eliminate cities and low lying coastal areas, i could live almost anyplace that didn't have right wing nut job neighbors. (left wing nut job neighbors i can deal with just fine) i only live in cities because in america, they're the only places it remains possible to do so without indenturing yourself to a car. now a place that has abundant public transportation without having to be a city to do so, would be pretty close to my idea of heaven. most of those seem to be in europe or asia. if there were any place on this planet where the dominant language was some variant of english, but the dominant belief system was NOT christianity (nor islam) that might interest me too. would still have to be away from tropical climates though. i really can't stand those. the san francisco bay area has the purrrrfect climate, but its over developed and over priced.
Been there, done that! In fact, I lived there, well Bingil Bay to be precise! I LOVED IT THERE! But those aussies don't let us yanks stay, damnit! Of course Mission Beach got devastated by the Cyclone a few years ago (just days after I left!). Has it recovered now? Only prob is all the SKIN CANCERS I got hanging out on Aussie beaches for 9 months! Lemme find ya a pic or two I took! Dunk Island from Mission Beach! Mission Beach on a very busy day! You can jump from a plane and parasail down to this beach! I liked to pick the tiny clams on the beach. Also loved the all the crab activity on the beach. Ha! I stayed in this hotel by the beach! Yeah, Dunk Island is a tourist trap. But not Mission Beach. Hardly any tourists that you'd notice.
Enough of Oz.... Here's where I plan on retiring to someday (when millions of dollars fall into my lap...) Who can tell me where it is?
Poor old Canberra, Australia. Always overlooked. Most beautiful city there IMO yet everyone would rather leave an overpopulated sky scraping city for another one in Sydney. Well, my opinion on Sydney is not very good. Anything nearby the coastlines or harbor literally stinks. The smell is awful. The streets are not clean. Canberra, like 70% less people, beautiful open mountain ranges, clean air and would you believe it, the same chain stores as Sydney and other capital cities. The only thing Canberra ever missed was concert tours. But like where I live now I used to travel the 3 hours to stinky Sydney to see music, then escape the cesspool as quickly as possible.
if i could live anywhere, i doubt very much i could find anywhere i couldn't find something wrong with. where i am now, is of course no exception. just give me mountains and trees and little trains and the hell away from cities and the tropics. where i can walk around in the woods by myself and sit on a nice flat rock and enjoy a fine spring day and nobody have a problem with my doing so. where i could build and live in a twisty little house and call it my home. and do so with what nature gives me and other people throw away. (and no nation, law or person, have a problem with my doing that either)
