That's probably relative but I know I can scrape a few bucks together for lunch today.

just so you know, i wasn't turning my nose down at your contracting business, or "favoring" being a doctor over that. it's just that i'm a biochemist, so i was more personally interested in a hypothetical business involved in health/science.

in fact, the type of business you describe seems like it would be more pleasant to work at than being a medical doctor. i'm the other type of doctor (you know...a PhD, who can't really help anyone haha). it never appealed to me to go to medical school.

Well then you don't get to go to hebbin. Only the rich qualify because of their righteous ways.

I didn't take it that way at all. And I'd probably rather be a biochemist than a doctor. I've always enjoyed science. Almost every aspect of running a business can be a royal pain in the ass at times but....there are two redeeming qualities that make it worth it....I can mostly decide what I get paid and I mostly have the freedom to do whatever I want. If I don't want to go to work tomorrow, I just won't go. But then I'll make less money so I go anyway.

Not sure where PR was coming from with that last comment.

When I read that I had the impression that he worked to make the money to build the company he now owns. Self made success is rather impressive.

Go eat a fat throbbing cock. And to the person above you as well. All I said is that he must have money, which is not a bad thing at all. Not sure why some of you cockgoblins took it the wrong way.

Your comment sounded vague and (knowing your general social opinions--even in this thread you mentioned that you don't want to be rich) condescending. No need to insult them about it. You could have easily made your point without insults.

Since I was the person above him, I guess that's directed at me but I'm not sure what I've ever said to offend you.

That's how I did it. Started with one truck and an idea. I almost failed so many times but just had to figure out how to get through it and learn and take my lumps along the way. It's a good thing we're much more established these days because I honestly don't have the drive or passion anymore (for this particular line of work anyway) that it took to pull this off.

I totally commend Mike for his success in making it and being his own boss. It's not an easy thing to do. Plus he seems like a nice guy, so I am glad for his success more than I would be if it were some other members from this forum.

I want to clarify....I am not wealthy or anything close to it. Whatever is left of the middle class is where I'm probably at and that may not even last forever. Things change. Right now I'm waiting on a decision for a pretty big contract and if we don't get it....maybe we won't go under but we definitely won't exist in our current form. But I'm not too worried about it right now. All things will be as they should be and I'll survive. But we've had this contract for a long time and I'd like to think if they were going a different direction at the end of the year...they would have the decency to have notified us by now.

Exactly half of people earn below the median income and half earn above it. It isn't average - it is the midpoint of an ordered set.

You're right. I did use the wrong terminology. But I'd say that if that number is $50k...it's probably household income as opposed to individual income (I'm just guessing there) and I kind of question the methods of determining GDP (they may be perfectly sound) with regards of how that number in any way reflects the actual income of the average worker. Obviously, I haven't done much research in the last few minutes on this but to say the same number of individuals make over and under $50k in this country just doesn't seem correct to me.

Lack of other viable jobs in the area, not having skils/education for a higher paying job or lack of higher paying jobs in the area. Of course injury and illness can certainly contribute as someone might end up losing hours and thus not making as much. Then of course the cost of living certainly isn't decreasing and much of the time wages are not keeping up...lots of jobs just get shipped to third world countries where people will settle for even lower wages out of desperation.

Also some people depend on their paycheck to the point they aren't exactly in a position to just quit their job and go find a better one, can't risk the being out of work and losing their apartment for instance.

Same here. Having to live on a low income forced me to develop strategies and find tricks to get all I need within the limits of my super low budget. I discovered along the way a lot of strenght, resourcefulness and resilience inside me plus the confidence I can face any situation, and those are all helpful on a daily basis.
