Even there, Obama is not anti-war. Additionally, going to war with Iran would be significantly more problematic than Iraq. Though I don't believe Obama has advocated that yet.
I don't care how it sounded. I just know they seemed to know he was muslim before all that shit hit the news.
It's really not a Muslim thing. What we think is Muslim here has nothing to do with Islamic tradition anyway. Much of Islamic extremism was actually backed by Israel and the U.S. during the Cold War, e.g. al-Qaeda, Hamas, etc. And, of course, so was Saddam himself. Some Islamic extremism is still backed by the U.S. where it meets geopolitical goals: e.g., Algeria and Saudi Arabia.
This is also from his site http://www.barackobama.com/issues/iraq/#bring-home : "Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda." Notice: a) combat brigades in 16 months; b) permanent bases; c) the targeted strikes caveat; --------------------------------------- *Why only combat brigades? *Why over a year??? *What are impermanent bases???!!! *But the cuttest caveat of all is the "targeted strikes" --- obviously ambiguous and open to interpretation. Everyone knows U.S. targets will be attacked, ok. The question is whether you entirely and immediately pull out of a region that does not want you, or whether you draw out the provocation.
To be fair, he uttered his speech before the Iraq war started. He has to live with the realities of the situation now. Effectively, dealing with the mess and aftermath. He can't really say I'll bring everybody home in a fortnight. It would be impractical and irresponsible. In 16 months the situation will have altered, he probably thinks by that time the situation will have improved enough, not for him to have to eat his words. IMO He is also gambling on the fact the Iraqis will have enough combat troops for the US not to need any out there. Though those guys will still need more training and 'over-watch'. Not lasting or durable; not permanent "Iraq" DO want us there.
Fitz, I know we have thousands of troops there. Are you making the argument it takes more than a year to pull them out? Odon: your line of argumentation goes back to my democracy thread.
i was asking because you put "why only combat brigades?" was primarily wondering if you knew that a brigade has all elements of jobs in the military (infantry, recon, cav, support, etc) maybe i'm just too high right now and overanalyzing things haha
Some shit some guys say, and it later becoming an internet rumor doesn't equate facts. Barack Obama not a secret Muslim. Anyone who can be readily convinced otherwise by an e-mail better never hope their great uncle dies in Nigeria leaving them a large fortune.
That's like saying an e-mail about a hot stock combined with Warren Buffet buying massive amounts of said stock does not mean that the tip was probably valid. These aren't just some guys I kick it with at the local pub. These are prominent members of the community who are well connected and well informed. Some sources deserve credibility. Others do not. That's all I'm saying.
