How long would it take to dry? How long would I have to wait before I could wear it again? Does anyone have experience in the spray painting denim vest department?
Depends on a lot of things I guess. Type of paint, air dried, sun dried, kiln dried. Probably could never wash it again, I imagine. I don't know anything about painting clothes. I can say this though. If it's not sticky anymore, the paint should be at least dry enough for you to put the vest on.
I want to spray paint the back of it and wear it to a concert tomorrow...so I'd need a paint that drys fairly quickly. I'll go check out the hardware store tomorrow and see what I can't find...
They do sell fabric paint that once set is washable. I am not sure how long dry time is as it has been years since I used it.
I'd do it quickly, not thickly and use a hair drier to set. You could get about 24 hours of dry time, right?
I was thinking about spray painting 1989 on the back of my vest, for the Taylor Swift concert tonight. It is the 1989 world tour. I've decided not to though, because I am running out of time and I don't want to risk ruining my vest. I'm still going to wear it to the show tonight though.
wouldn't that pretty much depend on what you spray painted it with? drying times are more dependent on paint chemistry then how the paint is applied. there are fabric paints, i have some shirts i've painted with them, that i've had, and machine washed, for more then a decade, that the images are still clear and perfectly intact. mine i hand painted, so i can't speak for spray painting. i have no idea if these fabric paints are compatible with spray painting equipment and with what kinds. but i'm pretty sure that most spray painting paints, are not nearly as compatible with fabric. of course denim is basically canvas, and canvas is a traditional painting surface. but not usually one that is expected to be flexed and occasionally washed.
Yeah, I definitely could have found something that would have worked well, but I came up with the idea last night and I think it was a bit too last minute to be able to execute anything extraordinary.
Even the really cheap spray paint dries very quickly, especially if you can leave it in the sun or have a fan blow across it (lightly). I assume you plan to mask it or use a stencil. Just make sure it's tight against the fabric to prevent the spray paint from blowing under the edge of the pattern. If you lay it flat and spray down onto it from above and let the spray land lightly in several layers it will last quite a while. If this is to be temporary, use latex spray paint. I have also done this with regular tempera paint using a toothbrush (remember to pull toward you so the paint flings away from you). Then make a cup of mint tea and have some creamed corn with a toast point!
i think your best bet is to forget the denim jacket and just spray paint a vest directly onto your torso. and then post pictures, obviously.
