Not everyone has dispensaries, so out of curiosity and maybe help me and others get an idea of how and what you do to identify good buds and bad buds? Or do you just buy and toke?

Generally a fresh aroma is nice, anything stale or odorless is a problem. Also you might notice a moldy smell, if so don't smoke it! It will make you sick.

Look at it with a loop or take a macro picture with your camera. Look for small black specks, they are probably excrement from Spider Mites, the scourge of cannabis growers worldwide (a result of indoor growing).

That being said, you can't really tell if it is contaminated with bug spray or anti-mold compounds without a lab test.

Getting something from a retail shop oro dispensary MAY or MAY NOT be tested, it doesn't hurt to ask... and avoid anything untested if you value your health.

So many people will just smoke ANYTHING they get... sad but true.
