Nope. The monastic cell look was also big. Now we call it minimalism.

And Op, you know we have a fashion and crafts section with many versions of this question? Some even have helpful answers.
    Some say "burn incense."

Make it into a voodoo shrine/prayer room. Or look at opium beds and draw on that theme.

A very cool thing I saw someone do started as a protest to the landlord who said that the walls could only be white. He used masking tape to make designs on the walls that he painted with white glossy paint. Against the flat white the effect was really stunning. He did it as a swamp scene on one room that looked like a sort of rotoscope effect at night. In another room he had a full sized Porsche 911 Carrera on the wall. I could stare at this shit for hours.

-Put glow in the dark stars on the ceiling. I have the in my room and I love laying in bed "stargazing" :)
-Hang up various colored xmas lights on the ceiling, or hang them from the curtain rods on the windows.
-Put a tent in there, fill it with a ton of pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, that sort of thing. Cuddle puddle :D
-Get some bean bag chairs, or those new chairs they have at places like Target with the cable type things.
    -Tapestries are cool.
-Black light posters and black lights
    -Trippy posters
-Put decals on the wall. There's cool decals pretty cheap on Amazon.
-Lots of different textures- fuzzy rugs, fuzzy blankets, a squishy chair or couch from Goodwill
-Put a fountain or something in there, you could get a cheap one at Kmart or something. Water is amazing.
    -Incense. Lots of those.
-Get a rubbermaid tub and fill it with random trinkets to mess around with- golf balls, ping pong balls, action figures, clay, etc
-Have an art station with clay, paints, canvases, markers, etc
-Start with white walls, paint a mural. Just paint whatever your heart tells you to.
-OR get chalk wall paint, so you can have one whole wall be a chalk board to draw on or write down your highdeas.

Let me know what you come up with, I have so many ideas lol. Oh, and you should check Pinterest.

Pinterest is a good idea. I would try hanging tapestries on the windows in your bedroom, maybe some string lights inside the room as well. Tie-dye bed sheets, bean bag chairs, posters, etc.
