https://wccftech.com/id-software-ryzen-attractive-price-point/ The id Tech video game engine is one of the few out there that provides some idea of where the industry is headed in general. That's because they specialize in fast paced corridor shooters where the whole idea is to render the best graphics possible just as fast as it can. Other games, like the Fallout series, can have a million and one different things in the environment you can interact with and open worlds to explore or whatever, but since the original Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein id software has always specialized in pushing as many pixels onto your screen as fast as possible for high speed action and eye-popping graphics. Without someone focusing on just plastering the pixels on the screen faster than anybody else, nobody else could produce the other kinds of games that will run on an average computer. Anyway, the fact that id is now working on leveraging more cores is a milestone in the industry. Most computer games only use two cores, the more demanding ones tend use only four cores, and only a handful can use more than that. However, even the older id Tech 5 engine could use as many as 26 cores allowing it to stream much of the graphics and lighting straight off your hard drive like a movie it just needed to decompress. John Carmack was the original brains behind the development of the id Tech engine, but left to help develop the Oculus Rift Vr headset. However, it looks like the people who have taken over know exactly what they've inherited in the id Tech and Bethesda has already cracked the whip. When they first sent Bethesda their latest version of Doom Bethesda sent it back saying it was total crap, so, they tweaked the engine to make it even faster and re-did the entire game creating a smash hit that returns to their roots of incredibly fast paced action with eye-popping graphics. Now it seems they are ready to leverage up to eight cores at a time and show the entire industry just what can be done with cheap ryzen processors that can have six or eight cores. Already Microsoft is planning for the XBox to have global illumination within three years and this new engine they are working on could mean fast paced action with graphics that put the current generation to shame.
